Tosh is all over him and wants him badly (good source here). Thinks we have a really good shot. He'll wind up a 5* or close.

Kuligowski is a career college DL coach. Let’s enjoy his time in Tuscaloosa before hurrying the mythical Bo Davis back.

He's also, Kuligowski that is, arguably the best collegiate DL coach. Yes he's kind of a shitty recruiter but dude turned out elite talent after elite talent at Missouri despite that. Then see what he did with Miami this past year

It's kinda scary to imagine him getting to coach guys like Raekwon Davis and LaBryan Ray... You guys should be pumped. That would be a hell of a hire.

He's not a bad recruiter. Has good ties to Houston, St. Louis (which pumps out an inordinate amount of top DL recruits relative to other positions), and South FL. He's certainly not a "top recruiter", but he's solid, will do quite well recruiting at UA, and is a phenomenal talent evaluator (just like Dunbar was as an evaluator). He'll be inheriting a lot of talent at the DL, just low on numbers. But all of Dunbar's evals/signees up until this present class (which we'll see this Fall) from the past couple classes look like excellent players.

5-star Hawaiian DL from same high school as Tua Tagovailoa talks Alabama interest

Faatui Tuitele has a chance to be the next 5-star Hawaiian to choose Alabama.
quote:

Hawaiian DL serious about Alabama interest

Faatui Tuitele (Fa-uh-two-e Two-e-tell-ay) sat at home watching the national championship game, more than 4,000 miles away from Mercedes-Benz Stadium. And when Tua Tagovailoa entered the game in the second half against Georgia, one thought crossed his mind: “This is game over.”

“I know how he thinks, his leadership skills and how he can play,” Tuitele told SEC Country. “He always presents himself as poised, no matter what happens. Even if he gets sacked, he’s poised. He throws an interception and he never holds his head down. He doesn’t let anything get to his head. I knew it was game over when he went in that game. Tua does what Tua does.”

It turns out the 5-star defensive tackle from St. Louis School (Honolulu) was right. As we all know by now, Tagovailoa led Alabama to a comeback victory and is now cemented in Crimson Tide lore for the rest of time.

Now, Alabama is going to try and sign another 5-star player from Hawaii in Tuitele. The Tide haven’t offered Tuitele just yet, but fans should expect them to when he visits on April 5. Tuitele spoke with defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi on Monday night and told him that they just want to be sure he’s serious about his interest in Alabama, and that will happen once he visits Tuscaloosa in early April.

It’s going to be an important visit for Tuitele because the first time Tagovailoa, who is a distant cousin of Tuitele, traveled to Tuscaloosa, he fell in love with the place. He only visited once to know that Alabama was the school for him.

Watching Tagovailoa have the success he had in his first year has shown Tuitele that he, too, could choose a school on the other side of the country and prosper.

“Seeing Tua on the biggest stage and win a national championship — it really motivated me and gives me the confidence that I can set a path for myself and go to the East Coast and make a name for myself like he did,” Tuitele said. “Seeing what he did in the national championship game was mind-blowing. Just the year before, I was playing with him in the state championship game. The next year, he’s in the national championship game. He let everyone know that Hawaii players can hang with the big dogs.”

Placing trust in faith and family

The nation’s No. 2 defensive tackle in the 247Sports composite rankings said having Tagovailoa at Alabama helps the Tide’s chances with him because it would make the transition from being so far away from home easier.

It’s clear from talking to Tuitele that having Tagovailoa at Alabama gives the Tide a clear path to having the opportunity to sign Tuitele when he makes his decision later this year.

“He deserves everything,” Tuitele said. “I know how hard he works. He has a great family. Uncle Galu and Auntie Diane (Tagovailoa’s parents) are great people and back him up with everything. We are raised to put God first with everything. That’s what Tua did. He represented our culture, our people and the island so well. It was awesome to see.”

Tuitele, who was told by Lupoi that he has the versatility to play anywhere on the defensive line, said that when he does visit Alabama he wants to see more than just the national championship trophies and hear about all of the players the Tide have sent to the NFL. He wants to see the environment Tuscaloosa has and learn why it’s the place Tagovailoa fell in love with two years ago as a recruit.

Most importantly, and it’s always a challenge with players from Hawaii, he has no qualms about choosing a school that’s on the East Coast.

“I’ve been thinking a lot about it,” Tuitele said. “There’s no distance that I’ll hold myself to. Nothing will limit which college I want to go to. Location doesn’t play any factor in my choice in the end. My family wants me to choose the school that I am most comfortable at.”

Alabama far from alone in this race

The 6-foot-4, 299-pound prospect doesn’t have a leader in his recruitment at this point and named Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Tennessee, Ohio State and almost every Pac-12 school as the primary schools who are in touch with him.

Tua isn’t the only Tagovailoa that may wind up at Alabama. Tua’s little brother, Taulia, is a 4-star quarterback in the 2019 class. He’s one of the Tide’s top priorities as the team is hoping to sign two quarterbacks this cycle.

“I talk to Taulia here and there,” Tuitele said. “Taulia is the same class as me, so we would be running into each other a lot and probably having similar classes. If he goes there and chooses Alabama, it would help me a lot.”

This recruitment has similar vibes to Tagovailoa, in my opinion. If he follows through with that visit to Tuscaloosa in April, watch out.

Kug recruited some pretty good talent to South Beach, including 5 rated 4* with the 54th,64th,71st,and 74th overall player in the 247 composite rankings in their respective classes. he was listed 7th best recruiter in the ACC in 2017.

Good assessment, except this part:

Yes he's kind of a shitty recruiter

That's a popular false narrative of salty Miami and Mizzou fans. Facts such as those in the above post by UAgrad93 do not support that narrative. And, to be fair, Mizzou is not highly attractive to top tier recruits. Kugliowski will do well in recruiting blue chip DL talent to Bama.

I like this hire -- a lot. All things considered, he's the DL coach candidate I liked best.

I think it falls in the middle somewhere. Both sides of the argument of his recruiting skills are constantly moving the goalposts.

He's about the same as Dunbar, maybe a nudge ahead just due to the fact he's been in college forever.

He wasn't brought into recruit, he was brought in to evaluate talent and coach DL. That's what he does best...

Maybe so. I know there was a lot of frustration at MIA with some big misses late & they have some real depth concerns moving forward at DT. But like you said Bama is a way more attractive place to recruit guys than Mizzou & he wasn't horrible at Miami either. Shitty was probably wrong but his reputation is as a talent developer not necessarily a recruiter. Bottom line, you probably aren't gonna find a better DL coach in the country

Updated 2019 Rivals100: Crouch new No. 1, four new five-stars

RELATED: Class of 2019 Rivals100 | Big Movers
quote:

The third numerical Rivals100 is out for the class of 2019 and with that comes the addition of a few new five-stars with the conclusion of their junior football season and the start of camp season. Here is a look at the changes near the top as well as the four new 5-star prospects.

There is a new No. 1 in the 2019 Rivals100, and that’s because California quarterback J.T. Daniels re-classified to 2018 (where he landed at No. 4) and left a hole at the top. The debate for No. 1 was a heated one. With a few names in discussion, North Carolina athlete Quavaris Crouch emerged as the No. 1 for this rankings release. Crouch reminds me of a bigger Ernie Sims for those who have been following recruiting for a long time or perhaps a Dylan Moses for those newer to recruiting. He can play running back at the next level and dominate, but he’s also very intriguing as a linebacker or even defensive end if he ended up on that side of the ball.

West Virginia offensive tackle Darnell Wright pushed up three spots to No. 2 while Texas wide receiver Theo Wease moved up four spots to No. 3. Rounding out the top five are California defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux at No. 4, a move up of four spots, and Georgia wide receiver Jadon Haselwood who fell one spot to No. 5.

The highest debut of a new five star was California athlete Bru McCoy, who debuted at No. 8 overall. Here’s a breakdown from our regional analysts of our new No. 1 and the four new five stars.

CROUCH LEADS THE FIELD

quote:

Quavaris Crouch takes over the top spot in the Rivals100 after an outstanding junior campaign in which he dominated both sides of the ball.

As a running back, Crouch is a wrecking ball with the speed to score from almost anywhere on the field. He runs low and breaks a lot of tackles using his power and quickness. Crouch also played linebacker as a sophomore and defensive end last year. He has a knack for finding the ball carrier and is a violent hitter that knows how to create turnovers. Crouch is getting more comfortable on the defensive side of the ball and it looks like that is where he will end up in college.

Alabama, Michigan, Clemson, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia and a few others are major contenders to land Crouch's commitment.

FOUR PROSPECTS EARN FIFTH STAR

quote:

Bru McCoy had an awesome junior season on both sides of the ball and has clearly emerged as one of the best players in the region. He is phenomenal as an outside receiver because of his size, strength and ability to dominate cornerbacks with his physical play and he was one of JT Daniels' top targets on offense. Then McCoy would switch to linebacker and be incredibly productive making plays in the backfield and tracking down players sideline to sideline.

As for his recruitment, McCoy remains wide open and is undecided whether he wants to stay close to home or play in the SEC or Big Ten. Lots of top Mater Dei prospects do end up at USC though.

Kenyon Green, a Houston-area offensive lineman, has been highly-ranked since the start, but after a strong showing against national competition in the Future 50 camp in January, he cemented his five-star status. He is built powerfully enough to play on either side of the line and has worked hard to strengthen his ability as a run-blocker. As he's grown, he's become a more confident player overall and could be a fit anywhere along the offensive line.

Green recently de-committed from LSU and is considering the Tigers as well as Alabama, Oklahoma, Texas and others.

I had a chance to see Zacch Pickens play late in the year and I was surprised at his size and speed as well as his motor. He lives a little bit off the beaten path, so it doesn't surprise me that not all schools know about him, but after watching him play in person combined with his overall film, it was time for us to make the move.

Clemson, South Carolina and Georgia are already involved and it will be a heated battle between several schools to land his commitment.

Every time I've seen Chris Steele play, he has locked up top receivers and never gives up an easy completion. He has excellent technique at cornerback, he can turn and run on the deep ball and he's physical at the line of scrimmage to knock receivers off their routes. Steele sticks with everybody and does an excellent job making it really tough on receivers to create any kind of space.

USC has emerged as a serious contender but Steele just had an excellent visit to Texas A&M and it's still early for the former UCLA commit.

Tide offers Big Ten QB commit (BamaOnLine)

quote:

Alabama hasn't been shy about putting feelers out to quarterbacks whether they are committed elsewhere or not. On Monday night, the Crimson Tide extended an offer to Wisconsin pledge Graham Mertz.

Since committing to the Badgers back in October, the Mission (Kan.) Blue Valley North product has reported offers from Michigan, Ohio State, Georgia, LSU, and Miami (among others).

The 6-foot-4, 205-pounder is rated the No. 9 pro-style quarterback and the No. 323 overall player in the country, per the industry-generated 247Sports Composite. Mertz passed for 3,684 yards and 45 touchdowns to just six interceptions last season.

Alabama didn't sign a quarterback out of the high school ranks in its 2018 class. The position will be a priority this cycle with two in-state names in Taulia Tagovailoa and Paul Tyson garnering much of the attention. Both prospects, however, remain uncommitted therefore expect the Tide to continue to recruit the position with spring evaluations and summer camp on the horizon.

In the last couple weeks, UA has offered quarterbacks Jayden Daniels, Sam Howell, Ty Evans (Colorado commit), and Lance LeGendre. Alabama currently sits with the No. 8 class in the country, per the 247Sports Team Rankings, with four commitments.

Bama remains after 5-star RB (BamaOnLine)

quote:

The accolades for Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy running back Trey Sanders continue to mount. After earning ‘Alpha Dog’ honors at The Opening Regional in Miami on Sunday, he was then invited to The Opening Finals this July in Beaverton, Ore. The following day, 247Sports tabbed the 5-foot-11, 216-pound Sanders as the sixth prospect in the 2019 class to earn a five-star grade.

Sanders was previously committed to Alabama, but he backed off that pledge in January. The nation’s No. 1 running back is now in no rush to make another commitment.

“I don’t plan on committing anytime soon,” Sanders said. “It’s been pretty much every school has been pressing me a lot.”

Despite backing off that Bama commitment, the Crimson Tide remain in constant contact with the talented Sanders.

“I talk to Alabama like once a week, Sanders admitted. “I stay in touch with Coach Tosh [Lupoi], a real good coach, and I talk to Coach [Nick] Saban about once a week too. He’s like, this is part of the process. You only get this process one time, and keep doing what you’re doing and make the right decision.”

Sanders was unsure of future visits, but he did take a trip down to Miami on Saturday to visit the Hurricanes campus.

“It was pretty good,” Sanders said of Miami. “I haven’t been there in almost a year and a lot has changed in a good way … The first time I went down there I was kind of iffy about it, but now I know for sure that Miami is going to be one of my top schools.”

The talented running back is planning to graduate early and enroll at the school of his choice in January. Sanders is currently the nation’s No. 6 overall prospect in industry generated 247Sports Composite.

2019 is going to be epic regardless but we are really high on some of these 5 stars. If the planets align it could be dumb and possibly our best class on paper
