We tried to use Truitt but that dude can not stay healthy. Got hurt at UNC too last year I believe

Edit: just looked him up and apparently he's not playing this upcoming year and instead focusing on getting MBA after all his injuries

Surprise! In-state WR Ja'Varrius Johnson commits to Auburn (SECCountry)
quote:

Each year, camp seasons brings a surprise or two.

On Friday, a big one came in the form of a commitment. Just hours of impressing the Auburn staff in camp, the Tigers offered 3-star receiver Ja'Varrius Johnson of Hewitt-Trussville (Ala.). It didn't take him long to think things over.

Johnson committed on the spot.

Johnson, a 5-feet-10, 165-pound slot receiver, is a speedster. He has recorded 40-yard dash times in the 4.36 to 4.45-second range. Right now, he's the No. 226 receiver nationally in the 247Sports rankings, but his stock is on the rise. Mississippi State offered him Saturday. Now, Auburn has followed.

For Auburn, Johnson is commitment No. 9 in the 2019 class. He becomes the second receiver on the Tigers' commit list, joining 4-star recruit George Pickens of Hoover (Ala.).

Auburn now has the No. 20 recruiting class in the country with about 14 or 15 spots left to fill.

Before Friday, it was not known that the unheralded Johnson was even a serious Auburn target. But after posting a 40-yard dash time under 4.5 seconds, he went out and shined in positional drills and one-on-ones. That drew the attention of Auburn coach Gus Malzahn, offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey and receivers coach Kodi Burns. After camp, Johnson met with the staff, then toured the campus.

Johnson is a transfer from Odenville (Ala.) St. Clair County. Per Maxpreps.com, he caught 56 passes for 854 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2017 -- in eight games. Additionally, he added 146 rushing yards.

The Auburn recruiting class has really started to take shape during the past five to six weeks. A commitment from 4-star cornerback Jaylin Simpson of St. Simons Island (Ga.) Frederica Academy got the ball rolling. That was followed by pledges from 5-star linebacker Owen Pappoe of Grayson (Ga.) and 3-star tight ends Tyler Fromm of Warner Robins (Ga.) and Luke Deal of Greenwood (S.C.) Emerald.

Here’s a look at where things stand for the Tigers with the 2019 class …

-Quarterback: With 4-star recruit Bo Nix of Pinson Valley (Ala.) on board, the Tigers probably are done at this position.

-Running back: Auburn has none committed and could take one or two. Noah Cain of Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy is believed to be the top target.

-Tight end: With two on board, the Tigers are done.

-Receiver: With Johnson and Pickens on board, Auburn still could add one more receiver to the class.

-Offensive line: Center Jakai Clark of Grayson (Ga.) is committed, leaving three or four spots to fill.

-Defensive line: The Tigers don’t yet have any commits and hope to take around four. Defensive end Colby Wooden of Lawrenceville (Ga.) Archer could be the closest to joining the class.

-Linebacker: With Pappoe in the class, the Tigers would like to add two more backers.

-Cornerback: Auburn has two committed and could add up to two more.

-Safety: The Tigers don’t have any commits, but 4-star recruit Jashawn Sheffield of Simons Island (Ga.) Frederica Academy could be close to joining the class.

BREAKING: Rising in-state WR commits to Auburn after strong camp performance (SECCountry)
quote:

AUBURN, Ala. — Ja’Varrius Johnson’s fast rise in the recruiting world took a major step forward Friday.

The Hewitt-Trussville (Ala.) High School wide receiver visited Auburn two weeks ago and picked up an offer from Mississippi State last week. He took another visit to the Plains on Friday for a camp. He picked up an offer from the Tigers, too.

Johnson took it to the next level, however.

The speedy in-state wide receiver — who is sure to pick up more offers this summer — committed to Auburn on Friday. He became the ninth commitment in the 2019 class and the second wide receiver, joining Hoover (Ala.) wide receiver George Pickens.

Johnson played his junior season at St. Clair Co. (Ala.) and transferred to Hewitt-Trussville (Ala.) this offseason.

Johnson has emerged recently on Auburn’s radar, and the Tigers staff made sure to seal the deal before other top programs got in on his recruitment. His highlight tape tells the story of why coaching staffs are impressed by him. At the Auburn camp on Friday, Johnson dazzled coaches with his breakaway speed.

The one uncertainty about Johnson may be his size. At 5-foot-10 and 170 pounds, he’s not a big-bodied receiver like Pickens. That didn’t scare away Auburn coaches, however, who saw his big-play ability at St. Clair Co. that will only increase in production for that electric Hewitt-Trussville offense. He hauled in 6 touchdowns in the spring game.

Auburn’s plan has always been to take two wide receivers in this class. The emphasis, to this point, has been on Georgia commit Jadon Haselwood. Johnson’s addition won’t change the Tigers’ plans with Haselwood, but it gives Auburn a security blanket of a two-receiver class if Haselwood opts to stick with the Bulldogs.

This is article from May on Johnson

Ja'Varrius Johnson, two-way recruit? 2019 prospect on the ascent (247)
quote:

As if his four-touchdown spring game performance Friday night (video above) wasn't enough evidence, Ja'Varrius Johnson continues to turn heads of late.

The Trussville (Ala.) Hewitt-Trussville standout, playing wide receiver and cornerback for the Huskies, has enjoyed a monster spring on the recruiting trail. He hit the 15-offer mark during the week and may continue to add scholarship tenders as he settles into a role at the tail-end of his junior year.

"He's only now about to blow up," one Hewitt-Trussville coach told 247Sports of the rising-senior athlete. "He's a freak."

Johnson scored three touchdowns from his traditional wide receiver spot Friday night against Gadsden (Ala.) City High School, but he added an 85-yard interception return for a score while working at the position more and more college coaches are considering with the 5-foot-10, 165-pound prospect -- cornerback.

The former Odenville (Ala.) St. Clair County athlete, who enrolled at Hewitt-Trussville earlier this year, is open to playing on either side of the football despite immense experience and comfort as a traditional wide receiver or in the slot.

"They're just asking if I could play corner, stuff like that," Johnson said. "I tell them 'yes sir.' They're asking if I can play both sides, return man, positions like that."

Florida Atlantic offered the three-star prospect on Tuesday, following Southern Miss and Western Carolina the week prior. But it's the in-state programs, each of which offered much earlier, commanding the attention of one of the Yellowhammer State's most explosive prospects.

"I like Troy, UAB, the ones that show me the most love," he said.

The recruiting process, which is still fairly new for Johnson, is likely to have more twists and turns ahead depending on how many new programs jump in over the next several weeks. The junior held just one offer, from Troy, entering this year. He has visited the Trojan program, as well as Tennessee, Kentucky, UAB and others in the region.

The next trip he makes has yet to be scheduled, though some of the programs on his list may soon face elimination.

"I'll probably narrow my list near the end of the summer," he said. "It's about how I fit in or if I fit in, a school that feels like home where I can get the best education."

The industry-generated 247Sports Composite has yet to rate Johnson, but he is among the top wide receiver projections in the state on 247Sports. He is currently the No. 71 overall prospect in the state on the network, although he is likely to shoot up the list as the 2018 season inches closer.

Hewitt-Trussville High School is coming off of a second-straight undefeated regular season in Alabama's highest classification (7A) and figures to be a state champion contender once again this fall.

If Curry wants on board I am sure they would take him but he's not deciding until December

Doesn't sound like Johnson will affect AU's pursuit of any other elite WR prospects. I think it just came down to fact the staff was that impressed with him today

Speedy WR commits to Auburn (Rivals)
quote:

AUBURN | Ja’Varrius Johnson didn’t need much time to think about his new offer.

Minutes after Auburn extended an offer to Johnson on Friday, the wide receiver from Hewitt-Trussville accepted it.

“I want to thank coach Gus Malzahn for the opportunity to be an Auburn Tiger,” Johnson said. “100% committed to Auburn University.”

Johnson received the offer from Auburn after a standout performance at camp. Johnson ran a 4.4-second 40-yard dash and was dominant in 1-on-1s at the Tigers’ High School Camp I.

“The camp went good, getting to know Coach (Kodi) Burns and how he coaches,” Johnson said. “I was able to run routes with him and he could see how I do."

Johnson committed to Auburn over offers from Mississippi State, Troy, UAB and Arkansas State, among others.

"It is the campus, the system and the coaches,” Johnson said. “I fit in Auburn. I fit in with the way they run the offense."

Johnson is Auburn’s ninth commitment in the 2019 class and second wide receiver, joining Hoover four-star George Pickens.

Johnson, playing at St. Clair County as a junior, had 72 receptions for 1,224 and 17 touchdowns in 11 games.

Unless its an exception for Haselwood I don't see how we will have the room for any other WRs

1 RB
4 OL
5 DL
2 LBs
1 CB
1 S

That's 14 with us potentially taking another S, CB, RB, LB or Haselwood if he were to flip.. Unless I just have the numbers wrong I don't see the room for any other WR's

My guess is the only other WR we would take at this point would have to be someone like Haselwood, Curry or Dunmore. Truth is there hasn't been a ton of WRs on campus besides Haselwood. Dunno how it shakes out, just know that if Haselwood wants a spot coaching staff isn't saying no

Also Johnson could play on defensive side of ball too so maybe they seem him as a pure athlete

I was thinking the same, but the opposite way, for Zion Puckett. Start out on defense, but could end up a WR depending on who else we bring in.

The last few spots in this class are going to be really tight imo.. We are still in it for a lot of big prospects and I think we will get most of them. I wonder if anyone is going to end up in a Kolbi Fuqua situation this year where they might end up having to take a grey shirt depending on who commits.

Spots aren't that limited right now overall. The projection is 22-23 & could grow to 25.

There's room even if we take a 6th DL which has been talked about. The coaches aren't going to have a hard rule limiting themselves to 22-23. If they like a guy a lot they will take him. The 9 committed plus your 14 is 23. 2 spots open for best available or a GT.

I know, but it was pretty close if he was going to have to or not. I forget who, but I think it came down to one player committing somewhere else.

I'll take your word on the numbers. I knew I could be wrong, I just know its close. I"m not mad at taking this guy by any means either. I think he's the type of player you stay in contact with and take later if you have room, but the coaches know the situation better than me and maybe he's about to blow up or maybe he was just that good when they saw him in person.

I could throw in Trovon Reed into that group as well as he was recruited for the same position.

I have no problem with the kid. I’ve watched him play, he has talent. My point was more to our poor use of that position under Malzahn. As Paw said, hopefullywith Ryan Davis, we have figured it out.

Forgot to mention this yesterday. Apparently Coynis Miller is waiting on a test score this week. If he gets what he needs he will enroll soon, if not....

Sounds like though Kayode Oladele is on track to be on campus later this month

Cam Newton, Ronnie Brown give Noah Cain the pitch (247)
quote:

In its recruitment of Noah Cain, the 4-star running back from Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy, Auburn got an assist from two Tigers legends last Saturday during Big Cat Weekend. One was Cam Newton. The other was Ronnie Brown.

Newton, the 2010 Heisman-winning quarterback who led Auburn to a national title, and Brown, the No. 2 pick in the 2005 NFL Draft, both attended the event, which brought in about 30 top Auburn recruiting targets to campus.

“Cam Newton and Ronnie Brown, two great guys that I met,” Cain said. “Cam Newton was just telling me about Auburn. Ronnie Brown played running back with my running backs coach (Cadillac Williams). Telling me how they shared the ball together, how they got better.”

According to Cain, he got some one-on-one time with Newton, which he thought was pretty cool.

“He was just like, 'Auburn is a great place for running backs’ and he definitely liked my body type. He said this is one of the best places to achieve your drams.”

In addition to Newton and Brown, former Auburn players Montravius Adams, Chris Davis and Carlos Rodgers also helped with the event.

For Cain, Auburn appears to be a top contender. Some sources think Auburn and Texas may be the teams to watch. However, LSU and Ohio State also remain very much in the hunt. Additionally, he will visit Georgia next weekend. Cain plans to release a top five in late July or early August, he told Auburn Undercover. “(The Tigers) have a real good chance of making it,” Cain said. “I had a great conversation with Coach (Gus) Malzahn. You know, top five is going to be real tough. I’ve been talking to a lot of different schools right now but Auburn is right there.”

Cain arguably is Auburn's top running back target for the 2019 cycle. The 5-feet-10.5, 209-pound standout is the No. 2 running back and No. 53 overall recruit nationally in the industry generated 247Sports Composite. This was his second visit to Auburn. He previously visited the Tigers in January with his father. His mother then made the trip to Auburn by herself to meet the staff this spring. Last weekend, all three -- Cain, his mom and dad -- visited Auburn together to attend Big Cat Weekend. Afterward, both Cain and his father told Auburn Undercover they had a great time at the event.

Auburn may only take one running back in the 2019 class. The Tigers already have their top quarterback (Bo Nix) and receiver (George Pickens) targets on the commit list. Nix knows Cain well and has actively recruited him since he committed to Auburn in January.

Hopefully Cam gave him a ride in the Bentley

This article came out before Johnson's surprise commitment but whatever

Who could be next to commit? (247)
quote:

Entering the heart of summer, Auburn’s football program appears to be in a good place on the recruiting trail.

After a strong six-week run, the Tigers have eight total commitments and the No. 20 class rankings. The commits have an average rating of 4-stars, which is quite good.

Tight end Luke Deal of Greenwood (S.C.) Emerald, who committed to Auburn on May 25 over Notre Dame and Michigan, was the latest to join the class. As of now — and this is strictly an educated guess — it looks like Auburn will add about 15 or 16 recruits to the list before all is said and done.

At quarterback, the Tigers have 4-star recruit and Elite 11 finalist Bo Nix of Pinson Valley (Ala.) committed. They’re probably done there. But elsewhere, the Auburn staff has a lot of work remaining.

On the offensive line, you could see Auburn add up to four more recruits. One the defensive line, the Tigers don’t yet have any commitments, but appear to be strong contenders for several top targets. At running back, Auburn may only take one prospect and Noah Cain of Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy appears to be the biggest target at this time. At receiver, the Tigers probably will add only one more. At linebacker, they have 5-star Owen Pappoe committed, but that leaves a couple spots open. And in the secondary, you could see Auburn take two or three more.

Who could be the next recruit to join the Auburn commit list? Here are some candidates.
