I think 6 is probably correct for us. 7 legit claims, 5 very strong ones where it is hard to argue any team has a stronger claim, 1 that is a very weak claim as the best team, 1 that is questionable.
The weak one is 1993. We were the only undefeated team in the country at 11-0, but FSU (the 1 loss national champ) was objectively better and probably would have beat us in the bowl game. Also, spurrier would have probably beat us in an SECCG rematch. We beat them at JH, barely and we were beat to hell after playing a 1 loss Bama the last weekend of the season.
The 1914 one is a maybe.
1913, 1957, 1983, 2004, and 2010 are all years we were the best and most deserving team in the country and very legit and hard to dispute.
So 5 or 6 is very fair number for us and easily defended.

How many does you school recognize....or do we just take your fans feelings and award you National Championship posthumously. I guess when nobody awards you a national Championship, you just reach out and claim it.

Let's break these down:
1913-The Billingsley Report named Auburn posthumously National Champions while using a new metric...margin of victory. however, using their primary metrics the Billingsley Report named Chicago the National Champions.
By the way, Chicago played a much tougher schedule, and also went undefeated.
1957-Legitimate. Auburn recognizes this one.
1983-Was not named national Champions by the UPI OR the AP Polls.
2004-Did not play in the national Championship game. USC was disqualified from the title for cheating, and Auburn fans want to claim it because they "might" have beaten Oklahoma.
2010-Legitimate. The school recognizes this one.
The "weak" one you mentioned.(1993) You think? You were on probation for cheating. Yeah.
