What can go wrong in 2018

At this point, most folks have looked to see what we got coming back in 2018. Our new coaching staff has shown a lot of promise. Expectations (of the fans, at least), are gonna be very high. The pessimist in me can’t help but try and temper my excitement, though. What could derail what’s setting up to be a special season for us?
I think we’ve got the talent to compete with basically anyone we play against next year, but I’m worried the learning curve for JoeMo’s offense could set us back. I have no logical reason to believe this, but if it were to happen, I could see it costing us a game or two we should win.
What if Shoop ends up being a dud? This seems highly unlikely considering his track record (prior to the UT disaster), but anything is possible. He’ll have gobs of talent all over the field, but I’d feel a little more comfortable with the D next year if we had held onto Grantham.
Maybe Fitz is never quite the same running the ball after his injury and doesn’t progress enough in the passing game to make Moorhead’s offense click? I don’t know enough about his injury to speak to the recovery. He SHOULD have the receiver talent next season to excel in the passing game, so the question will be whether he can make the needed strides there. Even though he didn’t throw much, I really liked Key’s touch in the bowl. There’s no QB controversy, though. It’s all Fitz next year.

Your weakness was at WR.
No longer the case.

Gonna be a great year!
18 returning starters and possibly a better coach on a team that won 9 games and finished ranked.
Girls basketball is dominating
Men's basketball is on the upswing
Baseball team looks to have a strong year
Economy is booming
Trump is president
I'll pay less in taxes
Ole Miss is in the NCAA pit of misery
Most excited I've been in a long time for a new year!

Losing Sweat to the draft would be the first thing that could possibly go wrong in 2018.

I'm just hoping Moorhead keeps it rolling on offense and shoop does what he did at Vandy. We're in a good spot that many other teams in the SEC are down.

My Penn State buddies said that the offensive changes will be obvious in the spring game. They went from a bad offense to a good offense over night. We are going from a pretty good offense to ????
I like our chances.
The D talent is really good. Shoop will be fine. Hell, Sirmon could probably coach that group and be tolerable.

Moorhead does run an RPO so we should be ok. As long as Aeris and Kylin tote the ball effectively, I think we should be fine.

That's a big probably.

Aeris and Kylin
I am incredibly excited to see how this duo pans out next year. Expecting big things - maybe not Chubb/Michel big, but in the ballpark.
Was it just me, or did Aeris look like he had a little extra quickness in the bowl game? He bursted through the hole on several of his runs and looked every bit as quick as Kylin. That was like my one knock on the guy this season and the one area I thought Kylin was for-sure better.

I did see quite a bit of the game from the beer hall in the end zone. Aeris was hitting some pretty small holes and squeezing through them. It was pretty impressive.

Deeper at DB than we have been in a long time, that problem is finally going away. I worry about LB depth in a different defensive scheme, but should be fine barring multiple injuries.
Honestly, the biggest make or break is Fitz's development in the off-season. The difference between a good season and a legitimately great season is him learning to throw the deep ball.

I’m not too worried about LB. Willie and Erroll, show a ton of promise, and we get Gerri for another year. Plus I feel like Leo returns to form a bit next season. I suppose the rest are unknowns behind those guys, though. Maybe Sh’mar can step in and contribute immediately.

Matt on Head to Head said today that Sweat was # 2 in the SEC in QB pressures. The # 1 was from Florida and he just declared for the draft.
I hope Sweat follows him. We lost Breeland, MSU has to give up someone to make me feel better.

Sweat sez he's coming back.

My biggest worry is square peg round hole syndrome kicking in.
JOMO seems to favor downfield passing and we are not exactly set up for that at QB.

Relax. He is basically a read-option guy. McSorley was a 50% passer and called "McSorry" by PSU fans before JoMo showed him how to do it correctly.

Overall I was a little disappointed in what I saw out of Hill this year. Maybe I expected too much out of him but I was hoping to see a few explosive runs from him sometime over the year but never really did. Did we have a RB go for a 30 to 40+ yard TD run all year?

I don’t recall any off the top of my head, but I saw enough flashes from Hill to be impressed. I think he has the right blend of speed/power/quickness to rip off a few of those next year once he starts getting in a rhythm and getting half the RB workload.
And Sweat coming back is amazing. As long as our LB/DB play remains solid, the SEC ain’t gonna know what hit it next year. Our DLine is gonna take some of these games over.

Hill just needs to work on using his blockers better which I am confident he will do, tough to go from being the best athlete on the field and getting by on athleticism in HS to having to use more a bit technique in college.
