And let's be honest. Smart was the DC at Bama in title. But we all know who was calling the plays on game day, and who was drawing up the schemes and game plans on a weekly basis, and who the recruits were signing up to be coached by.
And when you have the level of talent and depth that Bama does on Defense in the Saban era... With a Grand Canyon sized gap in the talent department between you and 95% of your opponents... It makes your job just a wee bit easier.
So was that defense I watched all year just some mirage or is Mel Tucker the biggest hidden gem in all of football?

UGA has, for quite some time, had a talent advantage over 12 of the 14 teams in the league ... at least according to the recruiting services. Something like an average Top 5 class for the past 15 years.
We didnt have this talent advantage when Meyer was in town, and have never had an advantage of this nature. There were plenty of holes on the rosters.
The talent advantage UGA possesses, and is increasing, over the east is unlike anything we have seen. Just watch where the east classes are ranked in 16 hours for proof. Either UT or UF was always recruiting a top 5 class back in those days, but now neither are, and no one else has taken their place.

Mizzou rebounded nicely under Odom - not sure if he can sustain talent wise though
That is all based on him hiring the right coaches as coaches will leave for better jobs. He will need to keep up with the offense with the next OC. That will be the key. Also winning around 8 games a year from now on will help with recruiting. That gets to the next level in year 5 or so. Muschamp must do better to find the right OC and be able to compete with UGA and Florida for the offensive recruits. Same for MIZZOU and Tennessee. Kentucky is slowing down a bit. I am not sure what will happened next year. It is a wait and see approach for new coaches and coaches that just been there 2 years or less on the job to make it winning around 8 games regularly.

It was a mirage. You faced one good offense with comparable talent. You faced them twice, but only once were they healthy and they butt fricked your pretender of a team to the tune of 40 points and 500 yards.
Its gonna get ugly and quick when Baker Mayfield and OU roll up on you.
Man, this board is going to melt for weeks on end when there is no SEC team in the title game.

Will the melt look like the auburn one you are currently participating in? I remember when you said the seccg was gonna get ugly for uga. You were so wrong.

Muschamp is holding serve at best in recruiting. It is not his fault, he works hard. But his classes are nowhere near what they need to be to get to the top.

Not yet they're not ... but he's working on that. If he finishes with a Top 15 class this year, and it appears that he will ... his 2019 class will be Top 10.
Thing is, if he shows success on the field, the higher ranked classes will follow. As stated earlier...the OC hire will be key. We all know he can coach defense. If he gets a legit OC, the kids will line up to play for him. He is as big a threat as anybody in the East outside of Kirby, imo.

We had one of, if not the best defense in the SEC this year. Who was calling the defense and drawing up the schemes? Was it Mel Tucker, or was it Kirby? I'm genuinely interested to see who you say.

Smart will make a much better HC than the latest Saban puppet to branch out, Pruitt... But Smart still has some proving to do IMO
I can agree with this. He has proven he can adjust. He has proven he can recruit. He has done a good job of in game coaching. Those are all important aspects of coaching.

Do you remind yourself that you won versus a beat up Bama team every day? (I don't see them bitching and moaning in every thread)
Good god. Everyone is beat up this time of year. Deal with it.

The problem with boom is that he hired Roper twice.
Muschamp is Muschamp. He can't be trusted with the hire.
He should be doubted until proven otherwise. Isnt this a fair assessment, Rooster?

Paper plate Jackson is back with his nonsense smh. It will be so funny to see you melt even more. Like you are doing now, being salty over the war sparrows loss in the sec title game.

Our seldom used 3rd or maybe 4th string dt was in on plays in which the DL beat the vaunted au OL like a drum. It was unfair for us yet we overcame.

And Auburn posters ran around crying that Georgia fans made excuses after the first game.
Welcome to excuse land. We wuz injured.
Just admit that your coach can't win the important games. You lost to FSU in your first really big game, and when you had a shot at the playoff this year, your coach kept injured players in the game until they dropped. Your coach got both your running backs hurt because he ran them in the ground running them 30 times a game. Oh, and if memory serves me correctly, Auburn beat Georgia by 23 points, and Georgia beat Auburn by 21 points.
And Auburn posters are so anxious to get away from Alabama they want to be moved to the East. You still would only win the East every 7-10 years like you do the West.

Legitimate point. he should probably take some outside advice. This is a huge hire and he needs to make a wise choice.

Roper was what appeared to be a decent hire ... at the time. He was only at UF that one last year and he had a decent resume. There were also limited options at the time.
Roper is a smart guy - he's more suited to be a pro evaluator though. He can see things, he just can't seem to translate that into play calling.
No one should doubt Boom's work ethic, recruiting prowess or ability to field a helluva Defense. We definitely have to doubt his ability to field an explosive offense for the moment ... however, he knows that so I suspect he's going to find a way to correct that and, knowing him now just a little bit, he's asking for outside advice and calling on the right people to steer him in the right direction. Wouldn't surprise me if he hasn't called Spurrier, Mack Brown, et al, for advice. He's got the network to fall back on.
This OC hire is huge.

I'm disappointed.
I know a few gamecock fans who had reservations about the roper rerun (they had hope... but they were not blind and dumb).
He's known since Florida.
How many OCs did he burn through down there?
He is what he is. Solid coach. But coordinator issues plagued the Richt years. It can get any good coach. (SC struggled to replace a damn good defensive coordinator under Spurrier, too). At some point, fans need to recognize who they have and what their flaws are.

IMO nobody knows, but there are several factors which lend one to believe Kirby is "building" something sustainable. I use building loosely.
He inherited a program that had won 10 or more games 9 times in 15 years and twice won 9 games. Obviously the key is uga had struggled to get over the hump. Kirby cleared one hump this season, will be interesting to see if he can clear the other. I wouldn't bet against him figuring it out even if it isn't this season.

First off, look at today. When you beat Saban head on head in the recruiting trail more than he beats you, that’s a good start. We made great in game adjustments throughout the season. I’m not naive enough to not know the advantage of being the school in Georgia. It’s huge. Something Chizik and Muschamp did not and don’t have. Kirby is doing next level stuff today. Having the Jimmy’s and Joes is the number one thing

This is huge. Being able to replace Coordinators successfully is also huge. It was Champs downfall in Florida IMO.
