Well some of our fans look at example after example of teams winning division, conference, and national championships, and have the crazy idea that Arkansas should emphasize defense too. Brain dead, right?

No. You're being an a-hole. It seems that's sorta par for the course for you though. You're one of those passive aggressive pricks. That's OK though. It'll be what it'll be.
I mean for fricks sake, I said my first choice candidate is Lane Kiffin.
You guys gent bent out of shape if someone even dares question the group think around here. frickin losers.

You gonna call Dabo Sweeney a defense coach? Gus?
No, but Venables is.

Just going to drop in here to let ya know that we are probably playing second fiddle for Lane.
Just saying.
Just saying.

I know. That's why I think we should hire Venables.

FL State... or? hmmmm
Ok, next...
Ok, next...

Might want to check that. Venables has as many rings as Gus, if I'm not mistaken.

quote:How many was he the head coach for? Or are we going to start looking at special teams coaches at schools that have won nattys just because they were on the staff that won a title? Wanting to give the HC job to a defense-only coach that has zero HC experience makes about as much sense as everything else you've said so far.

quote:I watched Gus take an Auburn team with a linebacker for a QB to the natty. They lost to one of the better Qb's of this generation. Venables hasn't been a head coach a single day of his life. Of all the uphill battles Arkansas is already fighting to compete in the west you want to take this opportunity to reset the football program by hiring a coach with ZERO head coaching experience. Classic. Venables is a solid 4th-5th option.
How many was Gus head coach for?

See this is what the folks on your side resort to, hyperbole and bullshite. Have I ever said Norvell, Kiffin, Leach, or Gus are 'offense only' coaches? No. It's just dumb, and shows that you guys are speaking out of emotion rather than logic.

I'll give you 3 guesses on what else they lost to. Aw hell you'll never get it.
They lost to the #3 defense in the nation.

ETA: I hate how you frickers always end up making me defend that sleezeball, but it's still true.

Sure it does. If Venables is our coach, they're still going to let us possess the ball. We'll still be allowed to have an OC and several assistant coaches for the offensive side of the ball.
The difference is, we know that Venables is capable if recruiting and putting together a defense that was good enough to help 14 of the last 17 national champions win.
If Kiffin or Norvell become the coach, we can be confident that either of them can recruit and put together an offense that was only able to help 5 of the last 17 national champions win.

And a downvote.
Norvell or Kiffin would be fine with the right DC, just as Venables would be fine with the right OC. I just think it's easier to find an OC who brings a top 20 offense, than a DC who brings a top 10 defense. Either way, that's what it's going to take to have any real success.

Yeah hiring fantastic career coordinators as head coaches has NEVER ended terribly before. You really want a brand new head coach to be cutting his teeth in the SEC West we'll have next season?
We're Arkansas. We have money. We have resources. Stop thinking like a Mississippi school. Texas A&M fired their coach and went out and hired Jimbo fricking Fisher. We should be knocking down the doors on the likes of Kiffin, Gundy, Leach, etc. ACTUAL head coaching candidates. Settling for Norvell, Venables, etc. this early on is just taking the easy way out and ridiculously lazy by the committee.
