I just don't get this obsession with a downfield passing game. We had the most explosive downfield passing game in program history in 2014 and came up short. We didn't have much of a downfield passing game from 2008-2011 either.
Well in a perfect world you would have both. Objectively having a downfield passing game and an elite rushing game is optimal. You can rely on either one when you need too.

Really? You don't understand how a proficient passing game, including a legitimate and consistent threat to complete intermediate and long passes, can make your offense better? You don't understand how a balanced offensive attack makes it harder for the defense?
There's no point in debating it with you, then.

I think that you are missing the point. His point is that we have won every single game except for one since Hurts has been our QB, and there have only been a few that have even been competitive. And the one game that we lost, our QB scored a touchdown to put us ahead on his last possession of the game.
Yet, it seems like its still not good enough for a certain, spoiled portion of our fanbase. They think that, with the personnel that we have, it could be better. They quiver at the thought of a team being competitive with us. They think that they know better than the coaches that get paid millions of dollars to coach.

He didn't say that. Cut and paste of his entire post...
"I just don't get this obsession with a downfield passing game. We had the most explosive downfield passing game in program history in 2014 and came up short. We didn't have much of a downfield passing game from 2008-2011 either."
edit: Oh yeah, and our passing game could be better. You don't think so? You mention the coaches. You don't think the coaches, given the choice, would prefer a balanced attack? I mean, because Saban has preached for years about wanting a balanced attack.

You completely missed my point. Yes, in a perfect world, we would have an offense on par with 2001 Miami or 1995 Nebraska. But unfortunately we live in reality and reality is cruel. My point is....you DON'T need a downfield passing attack to win a national championship. We've proven that multiple times over the last 10 years. It helps. But it's not the end of the world if it's not there.

Well then, you should say what you mean, because what you said was nothing about that.
So now you think it's cruel that we don't have a better offense? You can't seem to make up your never mind.
"Yes, in a perfect world, we would have an offense on par with 2001 Miami or 1995 Nebraska. But unfortunately we live in reality and reality is cruel."
Nevermind that 1995 Nebraska wasn't a balanced offense either, and anyway, it isn't 1995 anymore.
edit: We've also proven with McCarron and Coker that a good balanced offense can win national titles. Evidently a lot of you guys are happy without that. You would have loved Gene Stallings offense.

We're currently ranked 17th in the nation in total offense as well as 8th in the nation in scoring offense. That's good enough for #1 in both categories in the SEC. There is always room to get better but those numbers are the best it has ever been under Saban as far as offensive productivity is concerned.

Yeah. We beat the hell out of the cupcakes at the beginning of the season. Hopefully we will win them all. It's possible.

And Georgia isn't beating up these cupcakes as well.
I am shocked people actually think that the 2009/10/11 offense was better than the 17 offense.
The lack of decent dual threat QBs in the SEC is surprising this year

Why couldn't we produce the same results against the cupcakes in years past? Either the cupcakes have gotten worse or our offense has gotten more productive.

I can't speak for anybody else, but I specifically said McCarron, Sims, and Coker teams. Evidently a lot of folks on this board are happy with what we're doing now, but I know a ton of Alabama fans that yearned for a balanced offense for years, and were very happy when we achieved that. I also know that Saban wanted that, or at least he said he did. I particularly liked the 3 national titles in 5 years.

Is that what you want? To easily beat the non contenders? I want to win national titles while we have all this awesome talent, though with 4 linebackers out, we may have to do it with offense, and there's the rub.

The Playoff games of 2015 and the GOAT 2012 team are what I want in Alabama offense. Totally agree.
I would rather have our offense now over every other offense of the Saban era, though.

The downfield passing game obsession is indeed unhealthy.
Sometimes you don't need huge explosive plays. Sometimes you just need to grind first downs over and over. Rests your defense, wears out the opponent's defense, runs the clock (good if you're ahead).
We had a bunch of explosive plays against Clemson last year, the problem was every other play besides the explosive ones were horrible.

Huddie, I've been accused of being a pessimist by some of the pumpers on this board, but you really are insufferable. Stop tarding up every thread. Either that or hopefully the mods will handle you. It's really stupid at this point, your relentless blathering. We get your viewpoint this 1st time, the 478th post saying the same thing is overkill. Really, state your opinion and move on. Sheesh!

It's in context of the thread, and most of my posts, as always, are in response to comments to me, so if you don't like that, I am really really sorry. Well, I'm really not sorry. It's a message board and if you expect everybody to agree on every subject then, pretty often, you're gonna be disappointed. It really isn't surprising that I get more comments and questions posted to me about this topic, because I just happen not to agree with most of the posters about it. Bottom line, though, it's about a game, so it's really pretty trivial, imo.

Wtf is wrong with you? You can't censor the man because you don't agree with what he says. Don't be a douche.
