That's all fine and good, but this doesn't support your hypothesis... in no way does placing Bama at 2 "protect them"... Placing them at 1 would protect them for the exact reason that I laid out and that others have now echoed. Protection is created by being ranked higher... more room to fall without falling out.

Independent of that...

The problem for Bama (if you want to call it that) is if they really beat the hell out of LSU this week (highly probable), currently at 19, there's a good chance they fall out of the top 25. So they may still have zero wins over currently top 25 CFP teams when the rankings are released next week. If we both end up beating Auburn, another team that may fall out or toward the bottom of the top 25 at the least with 4 losses. They have very little resume "upside". The 2 best teams they'll play, we also play(ed). LSU and Texas A&M (who would normally be "quality wins") both beat Florida but by no means were they convincing wins, so there is a little wind out of the sails on both of those teams.

If we continue to blow out East teams, and ND continues to win, we've actually got some slight leverage where a really close game in the SECCG could actually keep us in were we to come out on the losing end. If we lose by more than a possession, likely nothing resume wise could overcome that anyways. Same would go for Bama honestly. They simply don't have the resume to warrant taking over a bunch of one loss conference champions if they lose the SECCG.

My gut says they'd get in if they lose anyways, but there are people (Booger McFarland for one) already speculating that UGA might get the benefit of the doubt because of the ND win while Bama might not due to their resume this year (FSU cliff diving this year is costing them pretty significantly). One thing is for certain... I would not want to be LSU this week...
