The actual story?
At one point, there was a list of polls that were considered pretty legit before we got to where we are now. One of these was the Houlgate poll. It was one of the few to directly correlate with the SOS.
That's not a defense, btw - I still think it's silly to claim it. That said, titles post-1950 had to be major wire (AP or UPI/Coaches') but before then there was some leeway.
Some fans, because of this, consider it in lieu of the 1966 title when Alabama was the only team with a perfect record, but finished #3 behind Notre Dame and Michigan State, who tied each other and finished #1 and #2. Neither team played in a bowl game (and this was when the title was awarded before bowl games). So Alabama took out their frustrations on #6 Nebraska 34-7 in the Orange Bowl. That's still not a defense of claiming the 1941 poll, TBH.
Personally, I usually just point to the Wire Press polls, and for the great teams of the 20s and 30s just remark that Alabama had great teams then and were multiple Rose Bowl winners, back when that was pretty much the pinnacle of the season.

not in 1941, it was a regional poll for some newspapers.
And the crazier fact is somehow the Houlgate 1941 poll actually changed the champion to Bama sometime in the 60's. In '41, they didnt actually win it(Houlgate)
MN 1st in Deke Houlgates final poll
