Difference between Clemson's coaching search in 2008 and LSU's coaching search last year

It wasn't a popular choice with the fans, either, and Phillips took a beating. But he had a chance to watch Swinney work the last half of the 2008 season as interim head coach after Tommy Bowden resigned under pressure, and it also gave Phillips time to do an extended search to see who was out there.
"That's the thing I wanted to make sure of, that we talked to people and did a legitimate search," Phillips said. "I thought Dabo had a real shot, even though a lot of other people probably didn't, but I wanted to have other coaches to compare him to and so much of it was the fit.
"What I kept coming back to was that Dabo was worth the gamble, if you want to call it a gamble, and I'd been around him enough to know that he was a great fit for Clemson."
Among the coaches Phillips had an interest in were Gary Patterson, Jim Grobe, Brady Hoke, Will Muschamp, Troy Calhoun, Mike Locksley, Bud Foster, Brent Venables and Lane Kiffin.
Patterson told Phillips he didn't have any interest in talking face-to-face unless there were assurances that Patterson would be the Tigers' coach. It never really got anywhere with Muschamp, because Texas put the head-coach-in-waiting tag on him to keep away Clemson and other schools. Phillips interviewed Kiffin, Locksley and Calhoun, among others, and Grobe was also right there at the top of Phillips' list.
"I didn't want to get fired, either, so I wanted to make sure we talked to as many good coaches as we could, and we talked to a number of sitting head coaches and coordinators," Phillips said. "But just because you've been successful in another environment is no guarantee that you're going to come here and be successful."

Dabo caught lightening in a bottle with Deshawn. And Clemson effectively has two head coaches with Dabo and Venables.
The train comes off the tracks once Venables gets hired somewhere - and he will this year.

He's 73-13 since 2010. I'm not sure why people keep thinking the wheels are gonna fall off.

I think since his coaching style isn't as business like as the norm, people assume Dabo is a fluke.

Hmmm. Weird that he had another bottle of lightning waiting on the shelf and ready as soon as Watson left.

To be fair he doesn't even look like your typical head coach.

Clemson was winning before Watson arrived. Deshawn Watson also had nothing to do with Clemson skull dragging Oklahoma and Ohio State the last several years.

For all but two of those years, the ACC was far and away the worst conference in the nation. That's why.

ACC was the worst conference in the nation during that time. I'd give him and Jimbo credit for helping to make the ACC better. But the W/L record is a joke.

Hmmm, the new guy isn't anything close to Watson right now. Not even close.
Replace Watson with the new guy in last year's title game and Bama wins by 17. Heck, if Bo hadn't gotten injured Bama would have won that game. Clemson wanted no part of tackling him. They were too interested in trying to fondle buttholes.

Whatever you want to think I guess. Clemson just keeps winning 10-11 games every year for almost a decade now.
I'm sure they're quite content.

I don't see why people still say this crap
Dabo hasn't built good teams, he's built a program
Could Clemson lose some games this year? Sure
The stuff you are saying about Venables people said about Chad Morris

LoL yeah the train was supposed to come off the tracks after Morris left, then after Deshaun, now after Venables, etc. Just admit Dabo is a boss.

Another Fun Fact is Venables was actually one of the names floating around back in 2008. And now Clemson has both

Could have said the same thing about Chad Morris leaving. Not only did Clemson survive, but they got better.
I am not saying Dabo is going to be Saban and win 17 NC's in a row, but Clemson is here to stay as long as Dabo is there. Clemson took a risk with a no-name coach and it worked.

How did Watson not have anything to do with your victory over OU in 2015? I could have sworn I saw him out there throwing and running for tds, no?! I'll give you 2014 as he didn't play but That OU team he was terrible. We had Trevor knight at QB and CURRENT Missouri offensive coordinator Josh Heuple. Edit I thought you were a Clemson fan.

Plenty of teams hire assitants from within, or from other schools.
The biggest difference among LSU's case and others, is that their new head coach is a proven loser, whereas all of the others are going at it for the first time.
Plus, there's that age difference. How old is Oregeron?

I'm of the age where I have seen this exact situation before. As did many who lived in the North Augusta/Aiken area during the Charlie Pell years that led up to the hiring of Danny Ford. And ironically Danny too was a unknown, first time head coach along with being a former Alabama guy just like Dabo.
If you think Dabo is running a clean, free from IPTAY influence enjoy your run. But a historically slightly above average team starts balling, look out. And consider how long it took Clemson to recover from those sanctions of the early to mid 80's.
Who knows, maybe TV will protect their investments and not allow the lid to be blown off. After all, they are letting UNC invent classes for players to keep their eligibility.
