Top players at every position this time around on Defense, they're more talented.

...in Monday night's game? I know it's only a three point spread but I'm firmly expecting the Saints to roll unless Brees has multiple interceptions.

I've been asking what will have to happen for a return. I see this as a major potential turnaround year. 2005 to the 2006 NFC Championship was a dramatic turnaround. Three straight 7-9s may require a similar jump start. Brees was the lynchpin but next most important might have been that draft class.
Review-
Bush- not all world but not a bust, was a vital component in the rise to the SB
Harper- he had limitations but was a solid box safety for ten years
Evans- one of the greatest draft picks in Saints history, potential HOFer
Ninkovich- he didn't do it here but was still a premium 5th Rd pick
Hass and Lay were nothing 6th Rders
Strief- it took years for peeps to appreciate a right tackle but a 7th Rder still starting 11 years later is a big win
Colston- similar to Evans but getting your alltime leading receiver in the 7th Rd cannot be appreciated enough.
Now what for this year? We do need a solid performance out of a free agent or two. I'd nominate Klein as becoming a leader and playmaker in solidifying the D on a whole. Okafor would be next. Here's hoping he will be hard to re-sign because of how strong he busts out.
More than free agents, I see this draft class as similarly pivotal as the '06 class. What needs to happen for a SB rerturn?
Lattimore- doesn't need to be all world shutdown but just a solid player you can pencil in at the position for a decade.
Ramcheck- for me his performance until Armstead returns will be one of the very most important keys for the season starting off strong. Best case scenario, he proves to be NFL stud-ready and make the need for Armstead even questioned.
Williams- he has shown some flashes, a defensive playmaker stepping up will be vital. He was considered washed up and only had a year left but Sharper provided that kind of spark.
Kamara- I've been high on him from the get go. I believe he will supply more than just the Bush-Sproles satellite role. After Peterson and Ingram depart I see him with more carries, sumpin like DeVonta Freeman.
Anzalone- The bottom of this draft class is where I see big bang potential in the vein of Colston or Strief. A 3rd Rder that starts game 1? I'm reminded of more potential than proven product 3rd Rder Jimmy Graham. Dream big whodats, this guy looks like a legit NFL LBer.
Hendrickson- I haven't seen as much flash from him but it would be my Saints dream to have more effective pass rushing options than we know what to do with.
Muhammed- This guy turning into the Colston of Saints DEs would be another dream. I see real potential with him versus some past risk picks (Pressley, Romeus).
Not all those have to happen but some at least. What I am most excited about is that these rookies are not only getting the reps but they are looking up to the task. Now let's see if the preseason magic is real!

If our D is just above average we will win 11-12 games and be a serious contender. I have a feeling this is gonna be a special season

11-5
12-4 if we upset Pats in home opener which I think is more plausible than most think.

LOL OL - as in, they don't have one and it makes me laugh.
Drew Brees should have been called for 1-2 intentional groundings and that roughing the passer in the 2nd qtr was garbage.

Im not one to talk shite, but I have read a lot on here where the Saints were going to be good on defense this year, and they were great in preseason.
I honestly knew nothing about the team this year, so I was like "oh ok, maybe." I turned the tv on last night and see Manti Te'o as one of their big pickups, and then saw 3 rookies starting, and another guy who is basically a rookie because of injuries, and though to myself "what are these frickers thinking? There's no way a team constructed like this would be good."

It really was mind boggling.

Yeah I really don't know what they were thinking there.

Some Saints fan downvoting every post to cheer himself up from the inevitable 7-9 season.

Great thread!
I had no clue the Saints fans were all giddy about preseason defensive stats. Wtf kinda shite is that? Who cares about preseason?
That Falcons D though....4 sacks and our boys were out there thumpin.
Saints wish they had anything to close to the Falcons D.

I live and work in New Orleans so it's been quite a brutal offseason. This last week has been great.
They're clinging on to that 28-3 mantra as long as humanly possible.
Y'all don't realize how hyped they all were as they led the nfl in most stats in preseason on Defense. Then game 1 rolls around. The local radio has been pure gold the last 2 days.
Most coworkers are still clinging on to the 28-3 theme though. Guess you gotta when you get dick punched that hard and you're 0-1. They're VERY nervous they are probably going 0-3 too with NE and then CAR looming.

The 28-3 thing is something that makes them feel good just like the "trump card" bit. Most true Falcons fans have digested it and came to terms with it. Yes it sucks but not nearly as bad as they hope it does. We have a future with this teams foundation and I love it.

There are few things I enjoy more than seeing that fan base full of inbred, swamp trash, coonass come to realize they are back to the Aints.. Break out the bags bitches!!!!! It's the time again!!!!!!

Pretty much this...as a general Atlanta sports fan, it sucked but I'm used to it. The aints fans that think 28-3 retorts are argument enders underestimate what I've seen in my 36 years. Been there, done that, have several well worn shirts to prove it. That sting was gone a week later...I'm almost immune.

As a fan of all things Atlanta, I remember all the failings of the teams. The 1996 World Series against the Yankees. Any other Brave melt. The 2012 SEC Championship game for Georgia against Alabama. The 2012 NFC Championship game against San Francisco. Thrashers leaving. I could keep going.
Nothing will ever compare to that Super Bowl. Im still not over it. I dont know if Ill ever be over it. After living though Glanville, June Jones, all the Rankin Smith years. The Vick crap. That win would have made everything wash away and the freakin Atlanta Falcons would have had a Lombardi trophy. It still hurts, and as a jaded Falcon fan, no amount of talent is going to make me think we will come even somewhat close in the next decade.

Yep - 100% agree with all the 28-3 takes.
It hurt bad. It's just part of the plethora of Atlanta sports moments that crushed me now. If we gave up after things like 28-3 we'd all be done by now.
