SC thinks that they can run on BO gap defense

We need to get back to the defense that we ran when coach K was here. That defense was suspect when we played teams that ran the triple option. (Auburn, Navy) It worked okay against most other teams with equal talent as Mizzou. This gap crap isn't working with these players.
A lil bit of the spring game.

I don't know that Mizzou has the LBs to play that defense. Brothers and Scherer were tackling machines for the last year of Stec and the first year of BO.
MSU took advantage of the LBs by using misdirection to get this group out of position.

Cross said in an interview the other day that the DL is not reading anymore. We essentially are running the same defense as we did when BO was DC

That's why Charles Harris struggled during most of the preseason with the Dolphins because he's not suited for read and react. They told him to just go at full speed.

And they probably will be able to run against us.

31 yards on the ground last week? We have a good DL.
Not so much worried about the ground game as much as what they can do through the air.
They are doing us a favor if they go run heavy imo.

I don't disagree that I'm more worried about the passing game because of our back 7 but I still bet they put up more than 31 yards against our D.

Crowder himself had 124 yards on 11 carries. As a team, Mo St had 140 yards.

I think they can and will. USCe will use the run to control the clock, this much I can guarantee. They want to keep our O on the bench. They'll only get pass-heavy if they are far behind. Big uglies have to stop them.
I'll believe in this D when I see them make stops. Until then, my PTSD from the SW Teachers College lives on.

I don't think the D is as bad as it showed against MSU, and there's a few easy things BO can do.
1. Personnel; get Perkins healthy, trade Perkins for Hines in the rotation at safety and MSU scores 28 and has 350 total yards. I think he's the best safety on the team.
2. Embrace what they can do. I know BO wants a pressure defense, but the personnel on the back 7 don't seem to be able to execute that. This needs to be like some of the early Stec defenses. Bend don't break, give up lots of yards, but keeps other teams below 30 points.

The read on Mizzou was that they were running weird open gap fronts on defense and Mo. St. took advantage of those gaps. Steck was here when Mizzou ran open gap fronts against Auburn in the SEC Championship game and was smoked and I don't remember if he was here for Navy in the bowl game. He(Stec) exploited the gaps.

I hope last week was the end of Read 2. It slows down the back end of the defense. Let these guys rally to ball and play tough in the RZ.

One would think after last years defensive failure with BO's grand scheme, he would have gone back to what worked.
Curious to see how the D does tomorrow

They had one big run where two defenders followed the motion man and left the area wide open.
They had less than 70 yards on all other rushes.
I'm not real worried about the rush defense or their rushing attack. Bentley, Samuel and Edwards on the other hand...

People tend to forget that Mo. St top receiver and tight end got hurt early in the second half and didn't come back. They killed Mizzou in the first half and they didn't have much of a passing game in the second half and Mizzou centered in on their running game.

I wouldn't say they killed Mizzou 153 of their 254 yards came on 2 plays.
Furmanek had no Mizzou player with 25 yards of him on his big play. That in theory should be easy to fix. If not that's a long season.
On Earls TD catch, that's a 15-20 yard competition and punt if Perkins is in the game. Hines doesn't seem to be able to tackle.

Communication breakdowns lead to 4 of the 5 first half MSU TDs. That has to get better, or the defense will be worse than any of us expected.

Whatever they got was self inflicted. They aren't good enough to "kill" us.
We either clean up the coverage breakdowns and broken tackles or we don't.
