I don't think any of us do (nor should we) feel any sympathy. This should be the season aTm feels actual effects for their roster mismanagement the last few years.

I am beginning to wonder, not joking, if Butch has gone legally insane.
There was this rousing endorsement of the Vols hopes "don't expect big things". The rallying cry on the team schedule poster for this year is "good luck". And his motivational gimmick (and if you need a gimmick to motivate your players you've already failed your job) is a... trashcan.
For a football coach that sounds a lot more like someone in the midst of a nervous breakdown then anything else.
