One good thing to remember about the likely piss poor defense.

We are going to have one hell of a running game.

If we can get out ahead and then ground and pound to keep the defense fresh, we might just have one hell of a season.

Last season the offense was off the field at lighting speed with no points to show for itself way too often. That started to change as the running game became more apparent.

Things might be really fun this year, or they might really suck.

We'll see...

M-I-Z.

I don't think it's a lock that the defense will be terrible. It could be, but it's not a certainty. If you compare the talent to 2 years ago, it's not that far below that season.
Compare the positions
At DE Harris wasn't any more proven as a player than Frazier is now. Brady and Frazier were unproven newcomers, similar to Turner, Smash, Williams, or Harold.
At DT the current roster is better. Mainly because Brantley was out due to his car wreck. TBJ is a better talent than anyone on that roster.
LB is the big advantage Brothers and Scherer were much more proven than anyone on the current roster, they also covered up a lot of deficiencies on that team.
At CB Penton was a proven player, but there were questions across from him.
At S Simon was a solid player that did make mistakes, Sherrils and Wilson were young unproven players.

Ultimately I think we find that a decent part of last years defensive struggles had more to do with coaching and scheme change than talent.
I don't expect the defense to be an elite defense like 2 seasons ago, but I do think the potential is there for it to be average to a little above average. Which should be enough to win at least 8 games.

I agree.

8 wins would be huge for BO.

Would be a first for a coach in his second year at Mizzou in my lifetime.

That would go along way to seal the boarders, even though I'm not too worried about most of the "Missouri 10".

Won't be shocked if the defense over performs and the offense under performs. Or not.

Just seems to be the way things work. Never like you expect.

I feel pretty confident in the offense with Lock in his second year under Heupel, and Crockett looks like he's ready for beast mode.

The secondary is scary, in a bad way.

Getting ahead and running the clock should be our plan of attack.

I'll be happy with as many 24-17/24-21 wins as we can get.

Everyone talks about Mizzou's passing game yet I think it's pretty clear that Crockett is the best player on the offense. As far as I can tell he'll be one of the best backs Mizzou has ever had and I never hype up individual players.

James Wilder is the best back in my lifetime. Joe Moore was second best in MY lifetime.

James Wilder's TD vs Nebraska

In that same game in 1978 you can see more of Wilder and their 2 backup backs who were darn good themselves in Ellis and Gant and their Hall-of-Fame TE Kellen Winslow and their best dual threat qb Phil Bradley.

I missed out on the Wilder days.

Blackwell was fun.

However, the kid from Angleton, TX takes it in my book. Give me Henry Josey everyday of the week and twice on Saturday.

Except Heupel doesn't try to slow it down to work clock when he gets a lead. (see Georgia game)

I guess they sort of modified it after that loss, but you're spot on with what they should do.

I think this team is far progressed on offense compared to the team in that Georgia game. We didn't even know what Crockett was going to be a that point last year.

I read a quote saying that Heupel's game plan is to stretch the field so the running game can flourish. I wouldn't be surprised if we have a balanced close to 50/50 pass-run attempt per game, so long as crockett stays healthy.

Should be exciting offensively.

I'm hoping hoping hoping that this defense shows a big jump in improvement over last year. It seems the players have bought in, and there is more leadership from the seniors. It really could go either way.

If I'm like everyone else, I have tempered expectations to a 7-5 season, but am hopeful for a surprise 8-4. But, if the D is that bad, and we struggle to 5-7, it means there are big issues that will need to be addressed.

I am very encouraged with the Defense.

It's the foundation that looks better. BO and the defensive coaches did a poor job last year. The Read and React (aka, Stand Up, Watch Ball Carrier Run By, Chase After) scheme didn't work and is gone.

Brick Haley is proving to be a big improvement over Jackie Shipp. Is getting personally involved with the players.

The kids are buying in. There is better leadership with Lock and Biesel stepping forward.

You also have to remember that we have lost Howard, Holmes and Byers during camp. Those guys, if not starters, were at the very least important rotation players.

Add that to all the question marks we already have and it's not a rosie picture.

Byers for sure can come back. He is only out 3 weeks. So he would only miss 2 games.

Howard hurts the most, as he was looking at a starting spot. And because great DL play help the back 7 look better than they really are.

I expect the offense to be more consistent this year.

I expect the defense to be significantly improved, even though they might not be as effective as the defenses in 2012-2015.

Mizzou might surprise some opponents this season....

South Carolina is the most important game of the year. If we are to have a good season we pretty much have to win that game.

Odom: D-end Akial Byers (sprained knee) way ahead of schedule with rehab, could practice next Sun or Mon. Will play a lot this year

Looks like Byers may be back by the USCe game.

Howard could have had a huge year taking on ROTs.

If Haley can coax 14 total TFls out of the position by rotation the loss doesn't hurt as much. They got 12.5 and 6 out of Brady and Frazier who were complete unknowns going into 2015. Unless Harold has a year that gets him an ESPN special, the two freshman are going to be on the field a lot.

Harold seems like a classic GP guy. Steady, unspectacular and doesn't make mistakes. He will play until the higher upside players behind him become more consistent.
