We are judging Etling off of what we saw last year, very unimpressive. But what if Canada can raise the level of Etling's play? I honestly think that Etling will be at least marginally better than last season. Maybe the kid just isn't a pro-style QB. Maybe a spread will highlight the things that are good. It won't help his arm strength, but we may see improved accuracy.

Etling can't throw the ball into tight spaces or down the field. Canada may be able to squeeze enough out of him using motions and movement to win 10 or 11 games, but they aren't going to win 2 playoff games unless their young defense becomes 2011 Alabama or LSU or they can road grade their opponents.

On top of that, they are pretty bad at pass protection. It's not a good combination to beat really really good teams and do it consistently (which is what you have to do to win a national title in the playoff era).

Spreading the ball out and running more shotgun will work in protecting the QB as well.
