I think he's genuinely pissed about it. When this came up months ago what he wanted was an apology. So now that he filed to coincide with media days it seems pretty obvious that he's got every intention of dragging it out.

I guess Ole Miss thought the good ol' boy in-state system was still gonna protect them with lawyers and judges etc?

Yes, at least through deposition, where a record is produced that fully supports his case and further embarrasses UM. I think he wants names made public and statements documented.
IMO, the deposition may get interesting.
