Unless you are an Ole Miss fan I really can't get the hate for him.

Look, I think my opinion of him is pretty standard for outsiders.

Good coach, not a winning personality. Knows what he is doing as a game day coach, and can develop players.

But he is in the toughest neighborhood in college football (SEC West). He is surrounded by great programs, and shares his state's recruiting base with State's biggest rival.

He's kind of a catch-22 guy. If he were more dynamic and a better recruiter he would have been snatched up by a bigger school (Miami, Georgia, Penn State, even Florida).

But he's not, and he doesn't recruit well enough to do better than he did with that Dak Prescott team.

Will say that depending on how Ferguson develops (well we know he can run for sure), and whether he guessed right on those jucos, this could be a very good year for MSU.

But long run he has a ceiling of exactly what he has been doing.

Maybe if he could assemble and keep a staff of ace recruiters it would be different. But they keep getting poached when a bigger school offers a gig to his assistants.

Dunno though. I imagine if someone ever did give him the keys to a job like Georgia he could do pretty well with it. But while we still don't know how good Smart is going to be, at least Smart has a higher ceiling in that he does seem to be able to recruit well enough to compete with Alabama.

My two cents and some lint I had in my pocket.
