Contract situation
This isn't pretty. I'm assuming we throw max at Millsap and try to re-sign Muscala and THJ. Thabo is most likely gone given Bud benched him in the playoffs.
There's really no way to get better as we stand.

I don't agree with Chernoff too often, but he has said multiple times (and I agree) that the Hawks have no legitimate path to build a championship contender in the foreseeable future. You can tank for years in a row but that guarantees nothing (look at Philadelphia). You have to get lucky and draft THE guy, AND that guy has to be able to convince 1 or 2 other "the guys" to come play with him. We thought we were getting a Popovich 2.0 where we could theoretically win without a superstar, but even Pop has had Duncan/Robinson, Duncan/Parker/Ginobili, Duncan/Parker/Leonard, Aldridge/Leonard/Parker, etc.
Until Atlanta can figure out how to draw top-flight talent, we are going to be stuck. This is why the NBA is #5 on my favorite professional leagues list. And I'm not a huge soccer or hockey fan.

I don't agree with Tech fans a lot but
making the playoffs every year as a middle of the road team will continue to cripple this franchise.
I also believe we need to let Milsap go. Giving an aging player a max contract is the exact reason we are in this position of perpetual suck

I don't think this is necessarily always the case. I think this next offseason could turn Boston into a real contender. They're going to be real players for Paul George or Gordon Hayward AND probably get the #1 overall pick.
They've built through smart trades and great coaching. You have to play everything perfectly, but it's a possibility.
A lineup of IT, Bradley, PG/Hayward, and Horford plus their depth and an elite rookie could challenge Cleveland.
They've basically done what Atlanta did, except they stayed the course and were able to pick up draft picks along the way. It's brutal to not have LeBron in a conference where LeBron exists, that's for sure.

Yep - agree with everyone. You can't win in the NBA unless you can sign great players, and even then it helps to have that tied to some lucky drafts.
Look at the Cavs. They had the equivalent of 4 #1 picks over the last 15 years. Lebron, Kyrie, Bennett, Wiggins (which turned into Love) and then they got LeBron back. They even got the luxury of perhaps the worst #1 pick of all time all because they lucked into the 2nd best player of all-time and another great player. Like baseball, there are years when there is no true #1 pick. Cleveland lucked into 2 years with very very good #1 picks (then got one of them to come back).
The Celtics have 10,000 top 5 picks, lucked into Lil IT and they STILL are overwhelming underdogs against Cleveland, and will be for the next 2-3 years, unless they convince someone to take their picks for a guy about to walk (George, Hayward).
There is no path for us. It sucks. It's why I didn't blame Bud for desperately trying something with Dwight Howard last offseason. He knew that the core with Al had reached the ceiling and he was hoping that Dwight would change the dynamic. It didn't work, but I get what he was thinking. The Bazemore thing was and always will be stupid, though.
Frick the NYPD and frick Delly for screwing up our only semi-chance in 2015.

It's become the same as the Jordan era. There is basically no hope.

When most of the top-flight talent uses ATL as the home of all their sidepieces, it's not gonna happen.

I think our best move is to unload the Bazore deal, see if we can trade Howard, resign Millsap and start compiling draft picks.
Start trying to build around the young guys (Schröder, Hardaway and Prince) and keeping Millsap around for a few years will keep you in the playoffs in the mean time.
Yes he will cost a lot, but sign him to like a 2 or 3 year deal because you won't be doing anything in those years anyway and his contract won't look nearly as bad without the $17 million for Baze and $23 million for Howard on the books.

I think we can find someone to take Howard. I'm not sure anyone is going to take Baze. I think we just have to hope he regains 2016 form and can be a league average starter next year.
Got to hope Dennis builds on his playoff run and gains consistency and that Prince takes off next year. Hope Bembry is a rotation guy, too.
Still, the ceiling is so low. Sucks.

Dennis is the only player worth keeping long term. I wouldn't mind seeing Millsap go. Howard and Bazemore will be hard to trade

Well a small victory with the Celtics getting the first pick is that we get the first pick in the second round.
But yeah, I think the only guys we have to build around are Dennis and Prince. Jury is still out on Bembry, but he may be a rotational guy. Problem is that those guys are the same age as Dennis, I think, so they're already behind a few years as far as NBA experience.

Yep. I soured pretty hard on Dennis this year, but the playoffs gave me at least a small hope that he will continue to progress. Prince is going to be a really, really good NBA player. That was a helluva hit by Bud and Co.
There just aren't a whole lot of options for us. It's a better, more fun and more satisfying brand of basketball (and much better organization).........but we're in a very similar position that we were in pre-Bud. Middle of the pack Eastern Conference team without the ability to bring in a big free agent and not bad enough to get an elite draft pick. Have to work around the margins.
