Anybody ever play bridge?

I don't play cards outside of kid games with my girls and although I have played many different games I have never played bridge. Can someone tell me about it?
I only ask because I have been reading sci-fi novels authored by Jack McDevitt and he has fit in a couple of games of bridge between the characters in every book I have read and it just has me a bit curious.

Did you give "The Dark Tower" a try? I was pretty young when I read it. If you're in the right mood I figured it would hold up though.
Never played bridge.

I did. Or I will when it arrives. I ordered it from Barnes and Noble online because they sell used books at just 4 or 5 bucks a piece. Should be here by Wednesday. Thanks for the suggestion.

Yes. Love it!
Aside from using it to pick up grannies at the local assisted living joints it is a fan game and good because you need to work as a team
You vs Everybody = Poker and Hearts
Team vs Team = Spades and Bridge
When I was younger bridge was an excellent early test if I wanted to do business with the people I played. Game skills translate well to life skills.

Bridge is a wonderful card game but it is definitely not for parties. It's a very serious game and can be very rewarding when you have a partner with whom you click. Otherwise you might want to kill him or her.
I played tournament bridge for years with the same person and it was addictive. He moved away and I couldn't find anyone else with whom I felt the same passion for the game and subsequently lost interest in tournaments. I still play occasionally but it just isn't the same anymore.

I liked switching partners to keep my game sharp as you have to adjust to each partner to maintain a high level of play. If you have a high bidder you have to compliment and adjust to not get stuck. If you have a low bidder you have to bid up to make better contracts.

Did you play in the 50's or 60's? It was a great party game with all the booze and smoke filled rooms. 70's came along and all the grass and pills screwed that up.

My grandmother and her bridge group tried to teach me once when I was over at her house years ago. They gossiped more than they actually played though, and I left not learning a single thing about the game, but learning that recently widowed Sylvia was a bit of a tramp.
I thought it was awesome that they were drinking Scotch at 10 in the morning.

My grandparents played bridge with friends almost every Saturday night in spring and summer. Football took up the fall. Bridge is a sophisticated game and you have to have a good partner.

You went over and hit it with Sylvia didn't you?
Didn't you? ??

Ok from a little research it looks like it is similar to spades but more difficult. I may try to find a place to play online and learn the game.

That would definitely make the story better, but I must say I did not.
