Totally lost the coaching search

Obvious safe hire from Jim Sterk in Cuonzo Martin. Sounds like Clownzo.
-Bottom Half league % 3s
-Bottom Half league in pace
-Bottom Half league in points
-.600 career record
-Made s16 once in 9 years coaching
-No way you can rate this hire better than a B, and that is with the Porters
Brad Underwood
-Middle league % 3s
-Top half league in pace
-Ranked 5th in ppg this year
-.800 career record
-Made round 32 2x in four years of coaching
Signed Cuonzo for the same contract price plus extra year compared with Brad Underwood??? Obvious loss in the coaching search, and if Illinois actually went after Cuonzo, they are delighted they didn't get him. Can't be hard to recruit when you're the state school of California. Cuonzo is going to bring a style of basketball more boring than Anderson. I thought Anderson was going to be a good hire but I also watched the guy win a national championship. If you like good ole boring 9-9 sometimes 11-7 basketball, this is your guy. I don't see how going 9-9 being bored out of mind is going to be any better than what we have now. Oh well.

Cuonzo's teams have been top 20 nationally in 3 of the last 4 seasons.

Cal is actually quite difficult to recruit to with the academic requirements.
Zo is an elite recruiter and an elite defensive coach. Underwood is neither.
Time will tell who made the better hire, but you are just being silly.

I don't buy that. Almost every D1 program (not ivy league of course) looks the other way when it comes to athletes GPA and test scores. So long as they are NCAA eligible, they are getting in. There are very few that actually turn some kids down, and that is mostly character related...see Randy Moss getting turned away by Notre Dame. Also, it is sort of self selecting.
But I will agree Cal-Berkeley is really tough to recruit to. Minimal fan support. Athletic tradition isn't the hallmark. Near San Fran, but not necessarily a "destination spot". Administration support is low in recent decades. Major instate competition with UCLA, USC, Stanford, etc., and Oregon's Nike behemoth just a couple hours north. That is a tough environment.

This is dumb. Im a big SLU fan, did you ever watch a slu game between 2011-2014? By your definition it was boring. but when you go to the game that was about 95% full, and see a W, thats not boring.

I dont fully buy into that. I think thats true to a certain extent. Mostly depends on the coach, too.

Except Cal. Athletes have to meet admission standards of the university, not the NCAA. Cal also has GPA requirements for athletes that are higher than the NCAA.
Cal also raised those standards after Cuonzo took the job there. It's a different kind of place.

W's bring fans. As a fan I could care less if we play up tempo and win or use all but 3 seconds on the shot clock and win.
How did Paterno, Woody Hayes, Bo Schembechler , Bear Bryant, etc stay in one place for so long with their boring type of play. They just won baby !!

Your not getting into Cal with a 3.0 unless you are an athlete or have major connections/$. That is the point. Also, notice the "most athletes". I imagine most of those exceptions go to football & basketball players.
Ivan Rabb had below a 2.0 GPA (per semester, not cumulative) for 2 years of his HS career.
The "higher academic standards" apply to VERY few programs... and even then, it is more of a character thing than a GPA and ACT/SAT thing. I can only think of a handful schools that I think actually turn kids away on academic grounds for football/basketball. Notre Dame, Duke, Stanford, and service academies, which is a whole other animal.

To be honest I don't think he is a home run hire... but Zo should be a solid double.
He recruits well and Missouri needs warm bodies with talent more then anything. He tends to have good defensive teams and that can pay off in the SEC where a lot of teams rely on pure athletic ability to score and do not run particularly complicated half court offenses.
I have some doubts about Zo's mental toughness, he tends to get his undies in a bunch a lot, but... Missouri should be healthily competitive with him in charge and if he does take his ball and go home after a few years y'all should have the table set for the next coach.
Its a lot easier to get a really good coach when you can offer him talent and a good situation to step into.

I agree with most of what you posted.
CM was the easy hire... Underwood was in my top 5 also. Illinois was smart to grab him.
Not a huge fan of CM's offense either... However, in the end, if we see more W's then L's.. All good.
I'm still eager to see how his staff takes shape, and how he recruits this year.

He left Mo St for UT- no shite
He was ran off by UT fans- not really his choice
He left Cal for Mizzou- no shite
If he leaves Mizzou it would have to be a blueblood job (and maybe not even then) and if he got such a job, it would mean a hell of a run here.
