Martellus Bennett vs. Ricky Seals-Jones

Bennett in 2007 was listed as 6'7" 253 lb.
Career stats in college: 105 catches for 1,246 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Seals-Jones in 2016 was listed as 6'5" 240 lb.
Career stats in college: 123 catches for 1,442 yards and 10 TD.
Key difference is that Seals-Jones played as an inside receiver whereas Bennett played as a true tight end. In my opinion, that's worth about a 2-3 round difference at a minimum. (Bennett was a 2nd round pick)

Marty B at the combine
6'7"
248#
4.68 40
34" Vert
117" Broad
He's now listed at 6'6" 275 pounds. I don't see Ricky filling out like Marty. I also don't know is Ricky can handle playing against some of the bigger LBs & DEs he'd face playing on the line.
Maybe if Ricky could have spent another year at A&M doing it then he'd be better off. At this point, he's a 6th-7th round / free agent type IMO.

We also threw the ball ~100 more times in 2016 vs 2007. I wouldn't be shocked if it was over 300 attempts different for their windows at A&M.

RSJ's draft porfile.
quote:
BOTTOM LINE Seals-Jones failed to live up to his "five-star" rating out of high school thanks to a lack of speed and separation quickness that was exposed in the speedy SEC. Separation on the next level will get even tougher and many teams see him as a tight end who may have to add weight and prove he can get after people as an in-line blocker to make an NFL roster.

Is he invited to the combine?

Hmmmm the draft preview I read also said Josh needed to add weight to play at a high level.
Maybe the S&C overhaul was needed.

That doesn't surprise me. Most of the 6'4 or taller receivers are 215 lbs. or larger. Reynolds is 190.

The knock on Reynolds so far has been all about his inability to get off the LOS against press coverage. I've heard scouts/analysts say he'd make a good 4th receiver but no more. I think he'll surprise people. Can't measure heart and every time we needed a play, he seemed to come up big. Kid's a gamer.

Reynolds is 6'3" 187 in his draft profile.
The comp on his NFL draft comp is Marvin Jones who is 6'2" 198. IMO that is still too small. The way Josh comes down with balls down the sideline reminds me of Deandre Hopkins at times. He's 6'1" 214. Both guys are shorter and yet weigh more. I think Josh should be able to get to a healthy 215 and be even more effective.

I think this was mostly just a lazy assumption that a skinny kid's weakness would be physical press coverage on the line.
They probably watched just enough film to see him get jammed once and locked in their confirmation bias.
I think he will surprise a lot of people, like he has since the beginning. He shredded the competition the entire week at the senior bowl. He's going to get passed over in the draft by some "high upside" athletes and then out produce them his whole career. He can play.
He's a more talented Todd Pinkston

i never understood the hype with RSJ. coming out of HS he was supposed to be too fast for LBers and too big for DBs, yet his film suggested neither. for some reason, A&M journalists are still toting that line and think scouts are in love with him.

All I can say is he better get his degree. He is going to need one.

RSJ will be lucky to be drafted. In fact, Speedy and RSJ will be the only Aggies invited to the combine who won't be drafted.

Trevor is projected to get drafted!?!?

Rsj injury prone as frick but I seem to recall money Bennett having an injury or two also

The scouts were Brugler (CBS) and Broaddus (former Green Bay, Philly) and they were saying the tape showed him being pushed out of bounds repeatedly off the line. But unless you watch the games for context you can't know how he comes up big in tight spots. Also, for my money, he's got some of the beat hands I can remember in an Aggie uniform.

Trevor Knight didn't get invited to the combine.

I have watched the NFL Combine every year for as long as I can remember. This year... I get to participate! Couldn't be more excited!

Is knight invited or is he attending as a thrower for drills?
