Virginia Tech (-7) vs. Arkansas
This is not a troll thread against any particular team. The SEC has a decent number of underdogs this bowl season.
Does this seem hard to believe to anyone else? Not that Virginia Tech is favored against Arkansas, but that the SEC has fallen off this much seemingly so quickly. It's hard to believe this scenario occurring 3-4 years ago.

We lost to a 3 win Mizzou team and also got beat by Auburn by 3,250 points this year.
+7 is being polite
Hogs win by 12

56-3 to be exact, but who's counting

Va Tech is, at worst, 3rd best. They'd beat Louisville and FSU imo

To be honest a lot of SEC teams played fairly crappy football this year and the bowl match ups were not kind.
Arkansas, for example, is going against a team that does exactly what we are terrible at stopping and its practically a home game for V. Tech. Its a horrible match up for us.
I think the conference will bounce back but the days of winning just because you are from the SEC are over I think. Hopefully SC and Arkansas both pull off wins today and get the conference back on track.

I don't have a damn clue what to think of arkansas. I can see them winning this game by 10 or losing by 20 and neither would shock me.

They are probably 4th best.
But that is semantics, and arguing that is pointless. 7-points is a pretty substantial amount, and it might move over a touchdown here soon. That is pretty incredible to me.

SEC has gotten worse over the past few seasons. Too many Universities trying to hire recruiters first as an attempt to not fall so far behind Saban and Bama. Other conferences (namely the ACC and B1G) have steadily brought in a bunch of very bright coaches. Seeing that line really isn't a surprise to me.

Yes, the SEC has gone downhill in the last few years and will continue to do so. You can't maintain 3-5 title contenders year in and year out (which we used to have) when one team is winning all the conference titles. Look how shitty the Big Ten was when Ohio State was winning it every year. Look how shitty the Big XII is with Oklahoma winning it almost every year. Look how shitty the Pac 12 was when USC was winning it every year. Look how shitty the ACC was in the '90s when Florida State was winning it every year. Look how shitty the SEC was in the '70s when Alabama was winning it every year.
The SEC had its strongest run during a period when no team repeated as SEC champions from 1999 through 2014. When we had Florida, Alabama, LSU, Georgia and Auburn all taking turns winning the conference title, the SEC was unquestionably the strongest conference in college football. To maintain powerhouse status, you have to win titles at least some of the time. When only one team is doing that, there is only going to be one powerhouse.

Gone are the days of multiple schools having elite coaches. Now it's Saban and 13 scrubs.

Intersting thought but not sure I agree with it. Look at the SEC schools who have recently made coaching hires:
UF- mcelwain. He damn sure wasn't hired for his recruiting. Saban disciple who did well at CSU
UGA- smart. UGA alum and saban disciple who built elite defenses for almost a decade. Happens to be a good recruiter.
Missouri- someone. Hired from within, doubt recruiting factored in too much
SC- Muschamp. Excellent defenses, experience at AU and Texas, and was head coach at Florida. Also happens to be a good recruiter
LSU- orgeron. Fits louisiana to a T, multiple HC stops, did admirably as an interim. Also a good recruiter
Just because recent coaching hires happen to be good recruiters...I wouldn't say those schools sought those guys out JUST because of their recruiting to try to get talent to compete with bama.

The ACC has really good coaches. Justin Fuente is one of the best in the country, in my opinion.
Petrino is a really good coach and had Arky humming when he was there. Richt was a really good coach and had Georgia winning 10 games every year. Cutcliffe is a pretty damn good coach.
Dabo, Jimbo, and Fedora are all good coaches. Narduzzi, Mendenhall, Addazio, and Babers are all pretty solid.
eta: top to bottom the head coaching in the ACC is considerably better than the head coaching in the SEC. I can't really speak to assistant/position coaches, as I am not as familiar.

I agree about the coaches. I've been on that train for as while now. The SEC has some very mediocre coaches.
Who is the 2nd best coach in the SEC? Dan Mullen?

I'd say Bert
Compare that to 2010 when you had Miles, Meyer, Richt,Petrino,Spurrier. I think Franklin was even at Vandy then too

It aint mullen but Idk who it'd be. I guess bret, or hell maybe gus? Geez we really do have a pretty lackluster cast behind saban.

Bert? The second best coach in the SEC?
He's neck and neck with O for worst in the West.

I would expect VT to win by more than 7 tonight. They're facing the worst Arkansas defense in my lifetime and one that can't stop a mobile QB if they had 22 guys on the field. Evans should have a field day and hopefully lead to some changes on our defensive staff.
The only hope we have to stay in this game is if the offense can keep up in a shootout. I'm not as confident in that happening as I am in Evans putting up career numbers against us.

If you take their entire careers into account Bert is clearly the second best coach

No fricking way.
Given how Arky recruits Bert actually overachieves.

I think he's in the conversation. Maybe Freeze or McElwain. Jury is still out on Kirby but I do think he will win at UGA.
That's my point. There are no fewer than 5 coaches, maybe even 7, from the ACC that I'd rather have than those guys.
