Wouldn't make too much sense for them to go to Illinois with the Illini getting 2 qb commits and 3 wrs commits and 2 of them 4 stars in this 2017 class. Whatcha think?

I agree with you.
If he's good, Estes has a chance to be Lock's successor and Heupel's offense could make Thomas a star.

I've gotten to the point I just don't think it matters. I haven't heard or read anywhere that Thomas is anything but a JUCO bound player and Estes, in my very uneducated opinion, will never start/play at Mizzou short of something catastrophic happening.

I agree.
I like our WR situation, especially considering Johnson is the small-speed option in the slot and he'll be here another 3 years.
And I always thought Estes was a charity offer in hopes of landing Thomas.
Have a feeling we could find better in next years class and sell the 'play now' or 'very soon' card, depending on what Lock does for his senior year.
It's more of a territorial battle. We don't want to give the enemy that ground. We've worked hard for it. But so be it. We'll win battles there again if we don't get these guys.

Estes is a super raw QB, and great athlete.
If he gets taught footwork and throwing mechanics, I think he could be a really good QB. His arm strength is not in question.

That's kind of the extent I know of him. Raw. Athlete.
Think he got the scholarship to help sway Thomas, and him being such a solid all around athlete helps with the risk management of such a charity move.
If things work out, our current qb should be a top 10 pick. Hoping we can do better for ourselves than a raw project.

If Estes sticks with his commitment, I believe that if he puts on some good weight he might be that dual threat qb we were looking for down the line. He needs to work also on his short to intermediate passes because he throws a beautiful deep one.

If you have arm strength, it's not that hard to hit a wide open Jeff Thomas down-field and look good doing it.
I'd be willing to bet Estes will never have the cerebral qualities to handle all involved in being a qb at the SEC level.
Guess we'll see.

What from his play in high school makes you think he can't be a P5 level starting QB?

Well..
Considering no other P5 team offered him until recently when Illinois got on the wagon to package him and Thomas, I feel pretty comfortable that my opinion is shared by people who have a clue.
He's a 2 star on rivals. Probably under 6 foot, although some sites have him at 6.
His highlights are actually pretty awful. I know they may look good to some of you, but he's not a very good mover. He doesn't run clean and smooth. His footwork isn't just bad, it's atrocious. Throwing mechanics are bad-bad. He's actually not anything special in the speed department, which is further complicated by his lack of size and fluidity with his movement.
Marvin Zanders high school highlights are far superior. His strides are very nice. Fluid. Smooth. He shows touch and deep strength. Speed is more evident.
On top of all those physical things, I would HIGHLY doubt he has the cerebral capacity to be a qb at this level while also having the charisma to lead.
He's just barely athletic enough to warrant the risk management decision to give him a scholarship to help land Thomas and make good with ESL. It helps that we want to go in the direction of duel-threat at qb, so it doesn't hurt to attempt the project for a year or so and move him to another position if he wants to stay in the program. This is 100% about Thomas AND keeping great relations with a H.S program that we want first dibs on.

Estes attempted 17 passes per game and/for 10 completion per game.
Hes a wildcat qb, not a duel threat qb (at this time)

That's just linear, monophonic thought. Stats don't mean anything. Sniff a guy's jock strap. Measure his emotional quotient. See if he can quote whole scenes of Good Fellas uninterrupted. Then you know you've got something.

Haha. I mean, dude.. so we're gonna say he's not a duel-threat style qb?
Pretty odd thing for that person to 'correct' me with.

I know we run a different style of offense now, but Corby Jones was 5'11".
Chase Daniel was was 6'0" with a similar offense that we run now.
Maty Mauk was 6'0" tall.
Both Brad Smith and James Franklin were 6'2"
Mizzou has not always recruited the usual height of a pro style QB. When Lock leaves it doesn't mean the usual height of a pro style QB will take his place.

I I don't think he's especially good at either pistols or swords.

His height is really the least consequential thing listed, although it factors in a little bit.
I was answering why I felt he wasn't a P5 starting qb: no other P5 team offered him, which should give all a clue. Illinois just recently did for the same reason we did, but we got on it a lot sooner.

Western Michigan offered him, they are a top 25 team this year.
