Why we should all be thankful for the Georgia Bulldogs

Younger posters on this board probably don't realize that until the 1980's, only ABC was allowed by the NCAA to broadcast football games. I remember growing up in the 1970's and only seeing teams such as Nebraska, Oklahoma, Alabama, Michigan, Notre Dame, USC, and Texas playing. Eventually the NCAA allowed CBS to begin televising some games. That all ended in 1984 when the US Supreme Court in a case titled NCAA v Board of Regents of Oklahoma and Georgia Athletic Association ruled that the NCAA was acting as a monopoly in restricting athletic programs by limiting broadcasting rights. What resulted was an explosion of college football and sports television.
For that, we are all greatful.

I actually did not realize this....I lived in the country growing up and unfortunately, we were not able to pick up ABC on the tv.

Thanks, I didn't know this. This was the beginning of the rise of revenue in the sport. I always knew the rise of multiple networks and cable sports channels made the sport grow, in both popularity and dollars, but I didn't know where it started and who started it. Thank you Board of Regents of Oklahoma and Georgia Athletic Association from 1984.

Yep, I remember this case and it was definitely a landmark ruling. Thanks for sharing the memories.

It's the spirit of the season. Peace on earth and goodwill to all men (and bulldogs)

He was only nice because they beat y'all last week. Thanks Georgia! I remember having to listen to most games on the radio.

Just make sure it's a revokable trust. I mean, he is a bug and they do seem to revert to insect behavior very quickly.

In the meantime ... GoldenDawg--->

I grew up as a teen in the early 1960s and teams were LUCKY to be on TV once a YEAR.
Fortunately Gators played Ga Tech in 1963 (depending on how you look at it, losing 0-9) In 1964 we had our first game of the season broadcast against SMU and some hotshot QB named Spurrier or something like that, completed a 50 yd pass to a WR and we won 24-8. In 1965 we were at the plains and painfully played AU to a loss 17-28.
OP is right...Notre Dame, tOSU, Michigan, Texas, Oklahoma and USC were the favorites.

My first game at Florida Field was against Ga tech. It was the highlight of the season, a 7-7 tie. The year was 1979 and even though we didn't win a game I knew I had to get season tickets because I was hooked for life.

Neither did I ... bump back to the top, good stuff OP. I was living in another country when it all went down so it is something I only vaguely remember.
