If we give Botch an extension we may as well just announce we no longer aspire to compete for championships and are happy with mediocrity.

It's not that I don't think we aspire to it, I just don't think we can obtain the kind of success we had mid 90's to early 00's again. With the internet, social media, and tv network deals there are a lot more options for people and players to get exposure. It will take a great hire (which UT can't seem to make) for it to happen again.

Where would Bama be today if Saban hadn't been available the year they need a coach?

I still think you guys are in an ok spot, especially when you consider how bad the East is at the moment. If Butch doesn't turn it around then I really do think the next hire is going to be extremely important. It is going to be tougher and tougher to get back to where you guys were the further you get away from those great years.

Depends on who they hired. They certainly wouldn't be trying to win their 5th national title in the last 8 seasons but with a competent hire they'd be highly competitive.

Mike Shula is widely considered an utter and complete disaster - and yet he had a winning record and went to a bowl every season but his first one - all while being saddled with massive NCAA sanctions.

Tennessee can't make a great hire due to employing stubborn/incompetent athletic directors, a chancellor who hates sports, and infighting among boosters. That said, Tennessee is replacing two/thirds of the problem within the next couple months or so. If Hart is allowed to give Jones an extension, you can be confident that winning simply isn't a priority.
