Prior to Nick, LSU was a good but not elite program. Not bad, but didn't raise a blip in the national consciousness.

Since you are educating us on the national consciousness of decades to prior to 2000s, how old are you?
You know there was more than just the 90s prior to nick Saban arriving at LSU right?

LSU is a top 10 coaching job at the present time. This isn't the 70's, 80's or 90's

People will complain about this, but I'd say realistically, it's pretty true for my lifespan (I became aware of football as a child in the 70's).

This doesn't address the 57 title, or the period in the 60's where it seems LSU was really good (and Ole Miss was too).

But, yes, prior to Saban, it seemed like our best years were seasons we ended up losing in a New Years bowl to someone like Nebraska, and we did employ the moral victory of getting there and "we played them well".

Best Game Ever for a lot of old-timers was a close loss to USC.

There's no shame in admitting that historically, LSU is good/not great.

That means nothing to today's program, and for proof, you need look no further than another SEC program: Florida. For the majority of their history, they have slid between mediocre to good, and then Spurrier arrived. Since his run, there's no denying that Florida is an elite program, regardless of occasional slumps. When they get things together, they are capable of winning national titles.
So, too, is LSU. 2 titles and another appearance in less than 15 years is proof that you CAN win it all at LSU. That's more than can be said for a lot of other places.
