And do we still have a straight answer for the logic behind the Muschamp hire?

Because so far it sounds like "mumble mumble recruiting, yada yada he learned something maybe last time, mumble mumble after Steve quit on us we wanted a younger guy." But that doesn't sounds like a plan, it sounds like a reinterpretation of the facts after the hire to create a justification.

What do they see in the guy? Really. Seriously.

I have a theory but I want to see if I am close.

People who criticize the hiring of Muschamp need to give realistic options on who they could have hired at the time.

Well, rumors around town are that Herman was in the bag and ready to sign his contract until USC lost to The Citadel and he saw just how bad the talent situation was and backed out. After Herman, Smart was rumored to be high on their board and some of the beat writers reported that talks were in place. UGA knew they wanted Smart for their next head coach, so they went ahead and pulled the trigger on Richt to get their guy. There were other names that were mentioned, but apparently Muschamp really impressed Tanner in his interview and with the staff he mentioned putting together. So, he got the job.

You didn't hear? They beat Vandy 13-10 so now Muschamp is the best coach ever!

As far as logic at the time? Yeah we wiffed on Smart. If we could have actually gotten him to ink a deal we should have earlier. There's a lot of stuff floating around about whether it was the citadel game or outside influences or if talks with Herman weren't as serious as they seem so I can't give a definitive answer on that. Personally I wouldn't have minded. He's done great things at Houston. I'll even allow for the fact that at the time I wasn't all that thrilled with the muschamp hire. However, I think you'll be hard pressed to find a Gamecock fan who'll say something negative about him presently. He's assembled a great staff, drastically blew recruiting expectations out of the water, and just generally built excitement around the program. No one is expecting any better than like 6-6 this year, but the pieces are there for success.

They got dropped by Herman after losing to The Citadel and settled for Boom.

Wish I would've seen this thread earlier, my post should've directly followed your question.

The team asked for a young and hungry HC with a lot of energy. They got that, they got Muschmap. Then let's look at what happened.

1.) Muschamp took over and assembled the best group of Asst Coaches that anyone in the SEC did.
- 3 former National Recruiters of the year (Thompson, TRob and BMac.) He then kept the centerpiece of what was left in our former coaches in Coach Elliott to help with the transition.

2.) He took a 2016 recruiting class ranked in the 70's and built them to #24 on the 247Composite within 2 months.

3.) Right now our 2017 recruiting class is ranked #15 in the 247Composite, #8 on the 247 Site Rankings, and #10 on Rivals.

4.) We are in the lead for 4 of the Top 75 247Composte players in 2018 (Thomas, Belk, Sandidge and Wynn.) We'll end up with a Top10 recruiting class in 2018.

5.) We up'd the budget by $10M for the new football operations building after Muschamp got here.

6.) We are 1-0 and, with a SEC road win in a game we weren't favored in. We allowed 160 fewer yards than last year against Vandy.

7.) Our FR WR, Bryan Edward, broke a SC Football record for most receiving yards by a FR in an opening game.

8.) Our FR RB, AJ Turner, avg'd 5.4 YPC his first game, which lead all SEC FR RB's with 10 or more carries in week 1.

Yet, some of y'all are acting like Muschamp wasn't a great hire.

Are we gonna win every game this year?!?!? probably not. Are we gonna win more than last year?!?! Definitely. However, right now we are rebuilding this team/program and very soon we'll be back on top in the East, like we've been for most of this decade. So talk all y'all want right now, but the #CocksComing and there isn't anything anybody can do to stop it.

We needed a defensive minded coach to fix our defense and we got arguably the best in the country. His issues on offense at Florida are so overblown. He had bad luck finding a QB. It happens, even Spurrier had issues with that. Muschamp was left with Meyer's leftover garbage on offense which is why Meyer left. Urban knew his O players were terrible.

Will wasn't their first choice. I am pretty sure they offered Rich Rod first but he turned them down. The USCe AD denies it, but the Arizona AD says it's true. They also interviewed Tom Herman. He woulda been a grandslam hire, but I don't know if he was offered or if he turned them down or what.

Not trolling here, but I think Muschamp will be fine if he gets a decent OC. Muschamp will always have a top notch D (has been in the top 10 almost every year as a DC or HC). He can coach the shite out of some D, but he just doesn't know jack about offense. I guess we'll see how Roper works out.

Meh, judgement is still out on him. He's done everything right so far IMO, has a good staff and recruiting has really taken off for them. If they could make a bowl this season it'd be a success and a solid foundation
