I'm not being a smart arse, but why did you go all the way to Africa? Always wonder about this with people.

I think it is because it gets more attention for the wannabe martyrs. Missionary work is not near as fun in Chicago etc. Missionaries have been going to Africa for hundreds of years which leads me to believe they are failing horribly, since thousands continue to go on these poverty tours yearly. Much more could be said about this racket, but this is enough.

I can't speak for others, but I'll tell you why I go. Before I do, though, I need some clarification. In your question, do you assume:
• Africa doesn't need help.
• Africa needs help but there are enough people in Africa willing and able to do the work.
• Africa needs help, but there is plenty of equally important work to do for equally disadvantage people in the USA.
• Something else entirely.
Once I understand more where you're coming from, I'll give you my answer.

I'm just happy that he is helping. It doesn't matter where he is helping.
