I just hope to see some life in the defense, secondary especially. I cringed so many times last season.

Gamecocks win.
Vandy's defense is going to be solid. I don't think we'll put up over 31 pts, but we'll have a much improved defense as well. We beat them 19-10 with an awful team last year. We'll be better this year and they won't have a dual threat QB this time.
Vandy won't have a lot of film to prep for Roper's offense. He'll have film from 2 years ago with a complete set of other players, so that will give Mason some problems. However Roper will be able to look at all of Vandy's film the past 2 years to see the gaps in the defense.

It could. Or McIlwain could light it up day 1. Who knows?
ETA: My point is it's a mystery. We are going to be starting a bunch of young guys. I have no idea what we will see on the field other than an up tempo offense. That's all Roper has said really.

Not really, we played a walk on at QB, and had a terrible RB situation. Our best RB last year was RS'd b/c we didn't know how awful the RB situation was really going to be. We upgraded the interior OL and now we'll have more options at WR than just Cooper last year. The biggest dropoff offensively will be TE. We also had 3 coaches last year calling plays, this year it will solely be on Roper and the offense will be more consistent.

I like USC. They lost like 4 or 5 games last year by a touchdown or less. I think they will be better than people think.

Look for a close Vandy win in a low scoring game. Vandy returns 16 starters, 8 on each side. Shurmur with a year of experience is a nice upgrade over turnover-prone McCrary from last year. Defense will be even better this year and it should show out from game 1.
