It is always hard to find when to start counting from, but this is IMO a big enough window to capture some history yet keep it somewhat relevant to how good programs are today.

that's when super regional play began. i actually don't see the problem with the time frame. the tournament expanded to 64 teams and added super regionals in 1999, so it makes sense given the parameters used
