they are a show of force for the public.

This is bullshite imo. The public doesn't give a flying frick about some 19 year old drinking. There really isn't any moral outrage over underage drinking anymore. It would be different if he was driving a car.

The only people that care are rival fans.

In my opinion, if the charges are dropped the school should also drop the punishment. They could do a personal meeting and punish the player in house but following thru with gametime punishment when other institutions would not is foolish and it serves no purpose. Instead of helping players like Nick Saban seeks to do when his kids get in trouble (Robinson and Hooty) we instead seek to punish and shoot ourselves in the foot. It's pretty silly

Point being in this day and age with Baylor and FSU and Penn State and UNC and on and on, people are itching to make a big deal out of a cover up (no matter how asinine). And while covering up underage drinking shouldn't be a big deal at all, its not the kind of negative attention you want to invite in with a new HC and a new program. We can get into the ins and outs of how ridiculous UGAs drinking and drug policies are but the fact remains that the policy is what it is, the media knows it, the public knows it, and the students know it. Just don't do dumb shite (or at least don't put yourself in a position to get caught) and there won't be anything to worry about
