It's this way because it's the system that has been in place for the last 80 years.
And if I am ignorant of history as you claim, please post examples correcting me.

How many of those were awarded retroactively?
Is this a road you really wanna go down as a Bama fan? All of your selections for 25, 26, and 30 were retroactive.

80 years, my foot. It's only been about 45 that people have generally accepted just wire service polls. Prior to that, others were readily accepted. In the 60s, FWAA was every bit as respected as either the AP or the UPI. Dickinson was the big one in the 30s. Nowhere was any "system" set out and accepted, hence, your ignorance.

Alabama fans calming out Tennessee fans for claiming national titles? Lol pot meet kettle. The piggys went undefeated in 64 while bamer lost there bowl game in 41 yall weren't even a top 10 team much less #1 I could go on and on.

No their 1 selection actually existed back then according to the records book.

Ok,73 was also bullshite. You lost your bowl game again so that's 3 that shouldn't be counted. Also 3 of the ones from the 30s that yall claim aren't recognized by the ncaa so there's that.

Houlgate was giving out champions, but he named Minnesota champion in 1941. Only retroactively did he do it post-bowl and name Alabama champ.

Wow this is a refreshing thread. Never seen this one before

Did he do one before the bowls and then one after? There's some confusion in this old Reddit post.

Which national championship trophy from 64 is in Fayetteville? AP? UPI?

The common procedure was to release Houlgate's title on the UP wire. This is what was released at the time:
Years later, Houlgate released a book called the football thesaurus in two different versions. In this, he listed his championships post-bowl. I have information on it somewhere, if I have to dig it up. Still, I've been told on this thread that nobody was doing anything but AP and Coaches' poll titles back then, so I suppose it doesn't matter.

The Grantland Rice Trophy, which was every bit as respected back then as either of those two.

The FWAA's Grantland Rice Trophy, which was still awarded up through the 2013 season (far right).
Ole Miss has one for 60.

And unlike the AP and Coaches (and NFF for that matter) the FWAA always waited until AFTER the bowls.

Anything after 1936 besides AP and Coaches doesn't matter.
I'd be interested to see Dickinson and Houlgate's publications prior to 1936, however.

And anything from 98-13 other than the BCS winner doesn't matter either.
Yet some people don't get that.

They only don't matter to the ignorant. There was no council that declared the AP and the Coaches' as mattering or not mattering. That's strictly interpretation and since nobody in 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s thought those were the only titles, it's ignorant to declare them such.

It matters to those who desire uniformity. Anything prior to 1936 is a mess because there are so many systems, both from the period and from modern times, awarding multiple teams in a given year their national championship. Houlgate and Dickinson were just two of many.

Too bad history is subject to lots and lots of interpretation. The people of the period didn't have the gift of hindsight. We know better now though.
