This is the human variant of Chronic Wasting Disease.
Contagious if you come in contact with brain or nervous system tissue or fluid.
very interested to learn how the patient became infected, it can be hereditary but most of the known cases are sporadic onset without many common factors.
Neither of Channel 5's reporter or anchor could pronounce the name correctly, nor did they give any information regarding the disease or how it could be spread.
Would be crazy if it's connected to the CWD found in the elk.

Not good. I'd hate to have had surgery there recently. Extremely low odds, but still scary.

I'm not of a very scientific mind, so the Wikipedia article confused me a little. From what I can tell, it's either genetic, or caused by someone consuming proteins from a person infected with it. It would make sense to me that some matter left from an improperly sterilized OR could transmit it to someone, so I feel pretty certain that's the case.
It also said that it may be possible to get it from blood transfusions.

If this did get passed onto someone thanks to WRMC its a big black eye for a hospital that has spent a lot of money to upgrade its facilities and personnel of late.

I saw WRMC and thought of White River Medical Center in Batesville.

It's like mad cow disease. It's caused by prions, and can be transmitted the same way mad cow disease can be.

That's cray cray.
Can't it be passed from cows to humans? There was a shitload of this in the UK a decade or so ago. Horrible stuff.
Most UK beef is banned elsewhere because of that outbreak.

They had a single case of this in my area several years ago.
No one else contracted it.

Looks like the infected sample was from a patient that was in the operating room on Feb. 15 per article in the demgaz.
So there's been a month of procedures done since. If they sterilized everything properly it should be OK.
The state's head of infectious diseases mis-spoke in saying there hasn't been a case of contracting the disease in a hospital since 1976 which is incorrect. Just a couple years back in North Carolina or Virginia about 18 people caught it from a hospital that didn't properly sterilize equipment and was re-using surgery tools.

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is pretty serious. Has WRMC had a history of problems or is this an isolated incident?
Posted on 3/19/16 at 9:01 am to BurtReynoldsMustache
isolated incident, they did a deep clean on everything and are back up and running.
It might the first time that facility has encountered CJD.
