Not sure cocaine is as addictive ... but I've never really used it so I'm no expert on that to say the least.
Opioids have been around for awhile. England, through the use of Laudanum, had a bad addiction problem back in the 19th and through much of the 20th century until it was outlawed and banned except for prescription use.
I seem to remember something about it being tied to Absinthe for some reason ... the green genie.

Um, you might not want to hear this but from a medical standpoint he is correct.

Cocaine? Sure, but it is a lot younger drug than opium. It didn't even exist until the late 1800s. There were a lot of problems with overdoses in the early 20th century but opium wins the killer drug race easily.
Now crack is a different story. It did not exist until the 1980s.

This coincides with the elimination of Darvocet. It was a weak and relatively harmless opiod pain killer. They said that it had zero medical value, when in fact it did a great deal to eliminate minor chronic pain. When they got rid of that, people with chronic pain had to get into the stronger medicines and they got addicted. Thanks Obama.

I am interested in hearing this explanation. Cocaine is both physically and psychologically addictive, so not sure how from a medical standpoint it isn't.

He said less addictive. Meaning you're more likely to know an occasional coke user than an occasional heroin user. People don't get drunk at parties and say, "what the hell, sure I'll tie off my arm and shoot some H."

The Top Ten most addictive drugs ... Source MASH HERE
quote:
1. Heroin Thinkstock Dependence Rating (Out of 3): 2.89 No surprise here: heroin’s addictiveness is the stuff of legend. As an opiate, it affects opioid receptors throughout the body and mimics endorphins, reducing pain and causing pleasure. Areas of the brain involved in reward processing and learning are stocked with tons of these opioid receptors, so when you inject heroin, you are basically training your brain to make you crave it. Pair that with nasty withdrawal symptoms and high fat solubility (which allows it to get into your brain quickly), and you have the most addictive drug in the world. An estimated 281,000 people received treatment for heroin addiction in the US in 2003, and according to the National Institute on Drug Addiction, a full 23 percent of people who have ever used heroin become addicts.
Then ...
#2 Crack Cocaine
#3 Nicotine
#4 Methadone
#5 Crystal Meth
#6 Alcohol
quote:
7. Cocaine danielcuthbert.com Dependence Rating: 2.13 Cocaine prevents the reabsorption of dopamine in the brain’s reward areas. After you use enough blow, your brain reduces the number of dopamine receptors in this region, figuring it's already got plenty of it. You can see where this is going. Because there are now fewer receptors, stopping the drug makes you crave it—after all, the body needs its dopamine. Cocaine doesn’t destroy dopamine neurons like methamphetamine, which makes its effect less powerfully addictive, but the fast method of use (snorting), short high (less than an hour) and rapid tolerance put it in the top ten.
#8 Amphetamines
#9 Benzodiazepines
#10 GHB

You know what your problem is Gradual_Stroke, other than being a snot-nosed little chubby gay fricktard who's Daddy didn't beat enough ... didn't put you in your place and teach you to respect your elders, or at the very least respect others?
Your problem is simply that you never know when to stfu. You're one of those who, rather than be silent when you have nothing to contribute of value, you speak ... thus removing all doubt of what an ignorant fricktard you are. I mean, sometimes you're funny, I guess ... but most of the time you're just, I dunno, sad ... pathetic even. You don't know how to sit back and let anyone have a serious debate or conversation about anything. And this is serious to me ... I clearly stated in my OP how serious it was and why. And I've actually gleaned some information and understanding from this thread. But you ... you always have to play your little fricktard games, about everything.
I blame it on your parents, I do. They should have started beating your arse around the age of two and not stopped until you just learned to stfu sometimes.
I'm sure they're regretting it now ... and so will you one day. I seriously doubt you'll amount to much. But whatever. It's sad really.
And yes, you may continue to stalk me - that's fine. I get it, I do. In your mind the Internet makes you my equal. Just remember ... that's only in your mind.
Regards

No it wasn't ... you, once again, were implying that I'm just an old dumbass. But when I asked the question, not sure of the answer, I was still fairly sure because I've known a lot of people that liked cocaine, it was big in my day ... and it ruined some of their lives, but most kicked the habit once they grew up.
Besides, there is nothing funny about this topic ... it's (heroin and other opioids are) not a joke. It's the scourge of this country IMHO, costing us billions if not trillions, and the cartels are getting rich and funding ISIS level terror just south of our borders because of it.
People are dying by the 10s of 1000s because of this evil shite ... heads are literally rolling. I fail to see the joke in it I guess.
I wish sometimes, I really do, that you didn't feel the need to have a pithy retort to every post I make about everything. I dunno ... it gets old sometimes.

The others covered it well. Cocaine is addictive but heroin is much worse.

no physical withdrawal from cocaine so I'm not sure how it's physically addictive. the mental addiction seems pretty crippling and not to downplay cocaine use but opiates are just whole other animal.
