I'm 100% southerner through and through and I have nothing but grudging admiration for how Grant and Sherman conducted their operations.

Both understood that the way to end the war and thus the nation's long term suffering was to engage in ruthless and utterly violent total war in the short term - a lesson completely lost on people today. Further, his campaign through Georgia and the Carolinas was as ballsy as any you've ever seen. The potential to see his army completely isolated without access to supplies and destroyed was very real (and may have happened if John Bell Hood hadn't been commanding the CSA forces) yet he did it anyway and pulled it off.

I don't disagree ... regardless, his statue should come down as well. What he did, just like what Lee did, would be unacceptable today.

If Lee is being villainized for the socially accepted practices of his day, today, then so should Sherman.

We no longer allow generals to sweep through lands raping, pillaging and burning.

The hypocrisy is not lost on everyone here I would assume.
