He went to LSU due to his godfather.
When Patricks mother was in the final stages of terminal breast cancer in 2014, she moved in with Bens mother and father and they took care of her.
They are close.

Did not know this. Makes sense.

OK, I retract the star comment. I think I was thinking of the kid who went to MSU anyway.

That's a great story about Simmons by the way.

We are projected the higher seed because we arent .500 conference play, rather #1 in the conference. Argue RPI all you want, but they definitely have no hope of being seeded higher than us as long as we win the conference or finish with a much better conference record. Lunardi has them out of the tournament, we are a 9 seed in the same bracket.

If we beat them this week, they will be 6-7 and we will be 10-3, and they can almost forget about making the tournament at that point. This isn't a strong major conference and a team with a poor conference record isn't getting in.

Bama beats LSU, then LSU maybe on the bubble (with UK in Rupp coming soon, going to be another L)...it goes both ways. Like I said, if Bama keeps on their path, they will get in the dance and get a solid seed. They have some impressive wins (on the road vs high ranked RPI teams). The committee places emphasis on those wins. Plus, their wins are coming lately (another emphasis committee places value).

Imagine they type of criticism Jonny Jones would be getting if Skal was at LSU playing the way he has this year.

If you are comparing Jones to Cal in player development, then this take sucks. Please turn on the NBA All Star Game and get back to me.

Little you forget the beatdown you got earlier this year

If Bama keeps on their path they will be 9-9 in conference play and definitely have zero shot of making the tournament sans winning the conference tourney. Do you keep forgetting they are 6-6 in a bad major conference right now?

Cal has had a handful of 5-stars land on his team each and every season. Far, FAR more talent than anyone else in the conference is getting and even the entire country on a year by year basis. The amount of disappointments has been a little more than it should be if you factor in the shear amount of 5-stars he gets that don't quite hit that level. Obviously you're bound to have some really good players when all you're getting pretty much is Top 50 type players year in and year out from high school.

Enjoy the win. This is not the same team that played in the PMAC...plus, UK never loses on senior day.

Simmons has only scratched the surface honestly.

He can be as good as he wants to be and that's TBD.

If it was easy to manage elite talent and develop them then Howland wouldn't be at State. This is routinely the silliest argument in the book. The only people "disappointed" are opposing fans trying to convince us we should be. Only three active coaches, who pull plenty of elite talent, have more championships (Coach K, Roy Williams, and Rick Pitino).

Roy Williams and Rick Pitino, seriously? Neither one of those guys come CLOSE to the talent Cal has rake din at UK.

None of those coaches come close to pulling in the talent Cal has at UK except maybe Coach K very recently (and it's still a big gap over Cal's total tenure). It's not like you're Saban/Bama and have a little more talent than the next teams down, you have A LOT more talent than the next teams down. UNC and UL aren't pulling in 3-5 5-star players on average every off season, Duke is starting to, but over the course of Cal's coaching at UK, that certainly hasn't been the case. It's criminal the amount of talent Cal secures to come to UK and you will only have 1 championship to show for it in 7 years. Saban has 4 championships the last 7 years and once again doesn't have some huge talent advantage Cal has had at UK over everyone else.

Starting in 2010, giving Cal a full year to recruit while at UK, these are the numbers of 5-stars signed from 2010-2016 classes at said universities:

1. UK - 26 (AVG per year: 3.7)
2. Duke - 14 (AVG per year: 2.0)
3. UNC - 7 (AVG per year: 1.0)
4. UL - 2 (AVG per year: 0.3)

So you can drop the whole "other teams elite recruiting" - the only coach to recruit at Cal's level during his tenure at UK has been Cal. Duke has nearly half the amount of 5 stars among the same time period and they are in 2nd place here. Coack K has 2 championships, Roy Williams has 1 championship, Rick Pitino has 1 championship and 2 guys at UConn have won a championship in the last 7 seasons. All with less talent than UK has pulled in.

You really coming at me with this dribble because Cal has the talent and Roy and Rick don't? Come on man, those two are recruiting the same kids and Cal is winning the battle of the recruits. And let me know how Cal is doing vs Roy and Rick since he has been at UK. Don't get mad because Cal wins on the court and on the recruiting trail. See you in Rupp soon.

Dribble? ROY AND RICK HAVE THE SAME NUMBER OF TITLES AS CAL during his tenure at UK (in case you still didn't see it the first time)...with far less talent. As the numbers clearly show.

Hell UConn has won 2 titles in Cal's tenure at UK and they certainly dont have the talent. Coach K has 2 championships during Cal's tenure and once again are the closest team to pulling the talent UK does yet it's still almost HALF the amount of 5-stars.

In case you dont get it, this is showing that while Cal is by far the best recruiter in the game, he's far from being the best coach, or considered a very elite coach for that matter. Good job recruiting, now turn it into titles like elite coaches would. An elite coach at UK these 7 seasons under Cal's same recruiting would have more than 1 championship, probably more like 3-4 as Saban has done at Bama.

Good call by the way, latest Lunardi Bracketology has us as a 7 seed and Bama still out of the tournament.
