OT: Radar/Laser Detectors

So after a little "incident" a few days ago with the good ol GSP, I'm seriously considering investing in a radar/laser detector. The question is, what's the best thing out there?
From what I've seen, it looks like the Valentine One or the Passport Max are the only reliable ways to go, but are there others? Anyone have expertise here?
PS: I did not get shot.

I thought those things just let you know you are caught?

If you spent $100 on it, then yes.

V1 is the way to go, I had one in my Corvette when I had it.

My friend got a good one for his 21st, not sure what brand though. I've always wanted one, but don't feel like getting harassed by the cops

A laser detector won't do you any good when it comes to avoiding a ticket. You would be looking for a laser jammer, which is illegal in a lot of places.
Really helps if you know what the local PD uses most regularly.

I figured there'd be at least one of you in the group.

Escort X50 has lasted me for years. Obviously there is nothing you can do about laser unless the guy in front of you gets hit first then you can slam on the breaks.
I see mostly KA Radar Band in GA

And I was just kidding, man. I don't typically speed. Hell, hadn't had one in over five years before Monday. Just happened to have a little extra time, took a different route to work to grab a coffee and found myself traveling at my normal route speed on the new route (which was obviously a lower speed road than the normal 316).
And let me tell you, that $161.49 coffee was NOT worth the premium paid.

I hear this a bit, though the two I mentioned up top do have pretty commendable results with regard to laser detection before being in range of the actual laser. At their price points, they should.
For the record, though, I was hit by radar. I was moving one direction and he was traveling in the other direction and was apparently clocking me while he was moving.

The problem is that the laser is so concentrated that if a detector goes off, most of the time the cop is already getting a reading of your speed before you even have time to process the alarm and brake. Not the broad, weaker waves that comes from radar.
I think the laser detection of the models you mentioned are calibrated in a way that it doesn't require sustained contact with the laser to detect it. This would be helpful if the cop is at a distance and has some trouble keeping it trained on your vehicle for the half-second or so that is required for a readout.
The good news is that most cops still use radar, and when it comes to that I would go with the v1. At the very least, you will be able to detect radar reliably and you will get notified of laser early enough that you will have time to ditch your stash or something before you get pulled over

And here's number two. Good Lord.

Those of you who have NEVER found yourself traveling above the speed limit in your lifetime, please know that this thread does not concern your kind.

X50 always worked well for me

I've got an escort 9500ix. Works well enough. As everyone said, once a laser gets you it's too late but it's nice to avoid KA and K bands. At the very least it gives you an idea if they are out there. Still have gotten clipped with it though but mostly it's because I ignored it.
And hinesville, you know that jack arse goes in the left lane and alternates going 5 under with going the same speed as slow traffic. Worst kind of fricking people.
