for players who go on strike?
Thoughts?
I'm no lawyer, but I don't see how the state would have any jurisdiction in such matters.

Well...
players are given a scholarship based on the agreement that they receive free tuition, housing, meals, tutors, access to training and medical care, books, etc. in exchange for them being on the team.
If a player decides to "strike" and essentially quit being on the team, then why should they still be able to receive all the perks? If I didn't want to go to my job anymore I certainly wouldnt' expect them to still pay me.

You don't see how the state would have jurisdiction over offers to attend school for free at a state institution? If you ever get in trouble, you should definitely call a lawyer.

Wow, getting out in front of the problem before it grows.

The state legislator has control over the University of Missouri. I don't see how they DON'T have control. I can't see who else would have jurisdiction over a state institution.
But, players cannot be allowed to hold a program hostage for non-football issues, like the communist revolution that occurred on MIZZOU's campus this year.

The real question to my mind is why they think they don't have the power to void the scholarships right now without this law. I guess it is possible Mizzou guarantees four years like Auburn and that is the issue.

I don't disagree. I'm just wondering how the state would have any power to enforce such things. TBH, I don't know if the state contributes directly to scholarship costs being a public institution or not?

Absolutely.
Wouldn't mind it at all if SC did this as well, actually.

I will bet that it gives the power to some third party, rather than the institution itself. I would also bet that it REQUIRES that Mizzou void the scholarships, so the communist school admin can't sit back and let it happen without taking action.

You don't see how the state would have jurisdiction over a university that operates as a state entity?

Its a slippery slope either way. They start voiding scholarships they may as well not even play football.

Cudos to the Missouri state legislature ... at least they are sending a message if nothing else.
Tells us that there are still reverberations permeating the culture there that need to be checked. And I am not knocking Mizzou this time, but obviously the school itself failed to address the problem - when that happens you can always expect politicians to get involved.

Why do they need a law when they could just pull scholarships. It is a contract.

I would assume because Missouri is a public school funded by the state, that gives them jurisdiction. It's no different then some state legislatures who have either threatened or actually passed legislation that forces one instate team to play another annually in football/basketball.
That all said, I'm trying to figure out why the legislation is even needed. You can revoke scholarships when student athletes don't meet the standards set such as academic and athletic standards. That includes attending practices and games.
I'm guessing they're saying that they want to supercede the decision of the University to not revoke them? If so, I'm not a fan of taking that decision away from the school itself.

Yeah, but if football players choose not to play football, they should not get to keep their scholarships for doing jack shite. Two way street. If you want to ruin your academic and football career, go on strike.

It doesn't tell us anything other than we have a good ole boy republican state rep pandering to his target audience. Reactive, not proactive.

That is a bad bill. But as you stated it is pandering by politicians. Because if it is only Athletic Scholarships then it is discrimination. If it is all scholarships then you are unfairly infringing on rights of students to form groups as a government, not as a school.

BINGO
The goose-stepping pinko academic commies can't just sit back and let it happen to force their revolutionary agenda.
Missouri is thinking ahead of the commie academics.
