I go with 38 sp. revolvers for home protection (too much can go wrong trying to wake up in the middle of the night), and H&K Viper 40 for carry. Next gun will be a Glock 20 Gen. 4 (10 mil).

There are so many quality pistols between 400-600 it's all about fitting your hand. I'd stay 9mm so you can practice a lot, no reason to have it if you suck with it. Look at M&P, Glock, XDm, FN FNS, HK VP, or CZ P07 on the polymer guns. If you prefer all metal it'll be slightly higher prices but Sig 226, Beretta M9, and CZ 75 are all fine weapons.

If you have a range near you that rents guns rent your top 2 or 3 choices before buying just to check overall fit when firing.

Got a Colt .38 detective special myself. Very nice pistol.

I agree with this for home defense with a slight change...

S&W 357 with 6" ribbed barrell blued with walnut grip. Loaded with 357 mags alternated with 38 special rounds. Very accurate weapon.

For CC I'd rec a Walther 380. Very easy to carry and beautiful gun.
