Martin finds warmth at Cal after feeling unwanted at Tennessee
thousands of Vols fans had signed a petition seeking his dismissal
But he worried about his family -- wife, Roberta; sons Joshua (18) and Chase (14); and daughter Addison (8). As the tension grew in Knoxville -- customers at his wife's store alerted her that some members of the fan base had turned against her husband
Martin decided to hire a security firm.
"When you have a family, it's your job to do everything in your power to protect your family and that is my job to do as a father and as a man," Martin said. "So we had cameras around the house, outside the house. We had them in different places on the interior, basically the doors and windows of the interior, just for that."
booster pulled Martin's access to a private plane on the day of a recruiting trip without explanation.
Football coach Butch Jones flew on a chartered jet to SEC meetings in Florida; Martin drove eight hours.
Wade Houston, the school's first black basketball coach, was denied admission to an all-white country club in Knoxville after he was hired in 1989. Former star Bernard King said he dealt with prejudice when he played for the Vols in the 1970s,
Those around Martin said he never blamed anyone but he was upset by the idea that some members of the Tennessee fan base wanted the return of a white coach

WTF, never knew y'all treated him so bad. Care to explain this story?

What do you expect from a city whose mayor is a KKK member and 98% of its fanbase could land a featured role in Deliverance vs Hills Have Eyes?

He has recruited fantastically at Cali, has a very good team coming back. Tennessee are the worst fans, I mean is pathetic. Y'all fired him after reaching the sweet sixteen just one round behind what Bruce pearl achieved

Tennessee fans were upset when, after losing to aTm in February, the team dropped to 16-11 overall, and 6-6 in conference play.
Cuonzo wasn't disliked because he was black...he was disliked because he wasn't Bruce Pearl. He was quiet and was defensive minded, rather than the outgoing Pearl...whose teams were more fun to watch.

Let me preface this by saying, I wish he was still here, but let's get our facts straight.
A. He wasn't fired. He was actually offered a contract extension.
B. The team was drastically underperforming up until the tournament. One of the last 4 in with 3 NBA players on the roster.

We lost in the 2nd round of the SECT and barely managed a play-in game to the NCAAT with 3 NBA players on our roster.

They didn't fire Cuonzo, he left for Cal on his own accord, but its pretty clear they treated the guy like crap. I don't buy into the whole race angle at all personally but can see how some could. To me anybody who came after Pearl was going to struggle to win the fans adoration and was going to be a target in a lot of ways, Cuonzo just happened to be that guy.
Now you add on the Tyndall situation & hiring an old guy who has been very successful but at this point looks like he's tired of recruiting (based on results to this point) & they might be in trouble here for a while.

Tennessee fired Martin just like Ole Miss fired Tuberville.

He also sought to "blur" his house on Google Street View,

The team actually looked decent towards the end of my mind serves me correctly, why would a coach want to stay at a place where he had to hire a security firm to protect his family

Excellent post. Agree 100%.

Larry Smith, a Tennessee booster
Smith said he thought Martin would help with recruiting and guide immature youths who "play streetball" and need to "clean up their acts."

To the Tennessee fans posting in this thread though are you happy with Barnes so far? I'm really really surprised he is not recruiting better & now Kosango has eligibility issues.

I think it's too early to tell about the recruiting at this point. But one thing I like about him is during his interviews, there's no coach-speak, no bullshite. It's a refreshing change.
