After watching the no huddle vs USC, my thoughts

QB: Kyler is good at the read option. USC sucks, but he was solid in his reads. On the flip side, he is not very accurate on the deep ball. Maybe that was nerves, but he was really off. That will come back to haunt us against good defenses when we need to force them to watch deep. Kid is a winner though; makes good decisions.
RB: White showing some good things, but not sure he's much more than a half step better than Carson. Seemed about even. If we are going to be more run heavy/option heavy like we ran against USC, we need to see improvement in RB most of all.
OL: Our pass blocking is still not good. Run blocking not much better. There were only 1-2 plays that USC rushed more than 4, and they were in the backfield all day. We're going to have to run QB draws 10-12 times a game just to keep the rush honest.
WR: Still not seeing consistent separation. The windows Murray was throwing into were TIGHT. Once they did get the ball though, YAC was pleasing.
Defense: The whole defense started sluggish, like they weren't really into the game. I can't blame them after the last few games. Once they saw our Offense scoring points though, it was like they started actually trying. Second half, aside from the apparently total surprise at the reverse plays, looked very good. Chavis continues to impress in the 4th quarter.
DL: Still over running plays. Would have had 4 more sacks if they hadn't over-pursued in the backfield and only got an arm on the QB. Good effort though, and had minimal issues.
LB: I'm not sure we field these. We just get roasted every play. Our LBs are just bad.
DB: Played well. INTs are game changers and while there were a few plays where they were in zone and out of position, I think this is a symptom of the LBs being so bad that the DBs are having to watch for the run a lot more.

Watch again, there were open receivers on almost ever play, Murray was 1 read and run. I hope he gets enough work this week to go thru a few more reads.

Murray posted a +5.2 on PFF overall.
He was the second fastest in the country at getting the ball out.
He's very accurate on the deep ball. He only threw a couple. He pushed one to Kirk. Speedy ran his route two steps OOB.
He'll figure it out.

Before this game he "didn't have the arm strength" to throw the deepball, now that he's over thrown a couple he's not accurate on them.
He got half a week with the ones and played his first start.
He'll get the rhythm with his Receivers and it's go time.

The quick release is the #1 thing I like. That's absolutely crucial to run this offense and we've been missing it. We just need to continue to get the ball out, as fast as possible, to the playmakers and let them make plays themselves. Murray can keep the defense honest with draws and read-options. I don't think it is necessary in this system to throw long bombs very often. We got into an offense with Allen where that's all we did and look what happened.

I'm expecting to see us look like 2012 with a real fast pace
This is what sets up the big play

Yes sir. Kyle favored the long throws and the sidelines. The change was pretty drastic from Kenny who couldn't throw deep.
Kyle shut down our quick game and the ability to work the middle of the field.
Kyle would have been much better at a pro style school.

Yup, once we get the hurry-up-a-hurrying and move the chains a couple of times in rapid succession, that's the time to toss a deep one because it will be nice and open. Gotcha! That's how the offense worked with Johnny when it worked its best.

Agreed. Not sure if he came to A&M a couple years too early or a couple too late.

Nearest big quarterback concern for me, tate Martell. Is he a running quarterback? Because it seems like the only way spavital has any success is with a quarterback who is going to run the moment the pocket starts closing.

If Spavital is still here for the start of 2017 we have bigger issues.

Martell is considered Dual Threat but he seems to be more of a passer that can run and not a runner that can pass. That should be fine.
I wouldn't make too much of the deep balls. He threw 3 in the game, 1 he should have put more air in it for Kirk, 2 were sideline throws to Speedy where he really would have had to throw a perfect ball to have a shot and honestly it looked more like he was throwing them away.
USC clearly watched the film on Murray and were betting he would get impatient and try to hit home runs. They kept 2 high safeties most of the game and made those deep throws low percentage. Kyler didn't take the bait and that's the most important thing imo. He took what was there on the Zone Reads and short to intermediate passes and worked the field without turning the ball over. Take that every game.
It will be interesting to see what Auburn does. They may go away from the 2 high safeties and try to stop the short to intermediate stuff. Then we will get to see how Kyler throws the deep ball. Personally I think most of Kyler's deep balls will end up being on extended plays or blitzes. I think his first priority right now is on not turning the ball over and I am just fine with that. If teams want to put 5 or 6 guys in the box then why throw it deep?

I think Kyler was wary of floating the one to Kirk after having the Bama pass picked off. He'll find his groove

so we actually have linebackers?
