Murray earns Tyler Rose National Offensive POW honors

TYLER, Texas – Texas A&M freshman quarterback Kyler Murray was named the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award National Player of the Week on Tuesday for his standout performance in the Aggies’ win over South Carolina last week.

Murray, from Allen, Texas, was victorious in his starting debut at quarterback in the Aggies’ 35-28 victory over the Gamecocks at Kyle Field. Murray rolled to a true freshman record of 379 total yards while rushing for 156 yards and passing for 223 yards. He was the first Aggie freshman QB to rush for 100-plus yards in his first start and he was the first player to pass for 200 and rush for 100 in a game at Texas A&M since former Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel in 2013.

With the lightning-quick Murray at the helm, the Texas A&M offense rushed for a season-high 321 yards, which was the most by the Aggies since the 2013 Cotton Bowl vs. Oklahoma. Murray and senior RB Tra Carson became the first Texas A&M tandem to both have 100 rushing yards in a game since Manziel and RB Ben Malena did against Mississippi State in 2012.

Murray arrived at Texas A&M in June with sparkling credentials, including a perfect 42-0 record as a starter at Allen High School (suburb of Dallas). He was also named the 2015 Gatorade Male Athlete of the Year.

Kyler’s father, Kevin Murray, was a record-setting passer for the Aggies and posted a 25-6-1 record as a starting QB from 1983-86. The elder Murray also started for the Aggies as a true freshman in 1983. In his starting debut, Kevin Murray passed for 217 yards with three TD passes on 18-of-31 passing and rushed for 39 yards in a 30-7 win over the Houston Cougars.

Tyler Announces The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award National Player of the Week

TYLER, Texas – Texas A&M quarterback Kyler Murray has been named the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award National Player of the Week for the ninth week of the college football season.

Murray, a true freshman quarterback, ran for 156 yards and threw for 223 more yards in his first start for Texas A&M in a 35-28 win over South Carolina. Coach Kevin Sumlin re-opened the competition for the starting quarterback job this week, and Murray was named the starter Friday. Murray completed 20 of 28 passes with a touchdown and ran 20 times with another touchdown and the go-ahead score.

Head Coach Kevin Sumlin commented on the offense under Kyler Murray, “At the Tuesday press conference I said we were going to change some things and I think it was pretty obvious our guys were more comfortable with what we were doing today. We ran close to 50 plays in the first half, so our tempo was a lot higher. Kyler Murray is comfortable in that setting; the coaching point was ‘be quick, but not in a hurry.’ He was able to communicate with our players and he did a great job communicating with us coaches during the game. The biggest thing for him was not forcing it but letting the game come to him. Once he settled down and actually began to read things out, he was effective.”

Murray is a graduate of Allen High School in Allen, Texas.

I have read that.

Need him to back it up vs Auburn though. We all saw jerrod heard come crashing back down to earth after a huge game. Fortunately Kyler can actually pass and the Auburn defense isn't that stout (although Lawson greatly improves their DL)
