Why are the Mississippi schools historically terrible in football?

I mean it is surrounded by all sides by states with colleges that have had a lot of success. What do Alabama and Louisiana have that the land mass is missing?

They have far less in state talent than there neighbors in any direction but split it between the 2 schools.

Back before desegregation, Ole Miss was legit.

I was just looking at some stats. We have beaten Miss St the last 7 times we've played them. The last time they beat us was 1999. We lead the overall series 9-6. That's amazing to me because we have traditionally sucked.

Arkansas, LSU, and Tennessee don't have to spilt their state with another *big* football program (sorry Vandy)

If Ole Miss and State were one school, it would be an omnipotent football power.
