The Peter principle is a concept in management theory formulated by Laurence J. Peter in which the selection of a candidate for a position is based on the candidate's performance in their current role, rather than on abilities relevant to the intended role. Thus, employees only stop being promoted once they can no longer perform effectively, and "managers rise to the level of their incompetence."

The Peter Principle is on full display in the SEC right now. Bert had a great record in the Big 10, but in the SEC he sucks.

Same with Butch.

Muschamp is the most obvious example. Good DC for teams with slow offenses, terrible head coach and bad DC for a team with a hurry up offense.

Any other examples in the SEC where guys get promoted past the level of their ability?

That's a good example too. He's a great OC, not a very good head coach though.

If Kiffin gets a head coaching job, I agree. But he seems to be a capable OC.

I love Arkansas obsession with Gus and Auburn. They would kill for Gus to be their HC right now.

Thank you for removing the final thread of doubt about your intelligence. History may support this wild accusation in time, but nobody using formulas and theories in a thread would see 5 games as "enough data" to make such a claim. To be clear I bet without looking Auburn is in the bottom third of plays run per game in the SEC right now.

A thread about rising to your level of incompetence and Les Miles isn't mentioned in the initial post. Today's gonna be a good day!

Yeah, not sure why anyone would be killing to have Malzahn as their head coach right now.

I think this point will be readily clear with Sumlin in no more than 3 years.

Miles is the anti-Peter. It's hard to imagine him doing anything other than being the head guy and the face of the program. Absolutely no one would hire him as an OC or position coach.

Just to think, he's been to more national title games than Lord Saban since he's been at Auburn.

The thought of the Peter Principle put a smile on my face.
