I've always liked Eli Gold. He was also pretty good calling NASCAR back in the day.

Then you should re-evaluate your knowledge.
He is anything but that.
He's a hell of a guy.

That's where I first ran across Eli Gold.
At the time, I didn't realize he was the voice of Alabama football as well.

A little story behind the story. Eli Gold is a New York kind of guy, a Yank, he came down to call the Birmingham Bulls Hockey games when we were in the WHA, you know with about 5 teams that are now in the NHL. I used to listen, we were known as the Birmingham Bullies to everyone because we kicked arse. We held the penalty record for about 40 years Teams were scared to see us coming to town. One of the Hanson brothers from Slapshot ( they weren't really brothers) played on our team.
Here is the rub, we decided to play clean Hockey and go with a youth movement, we merged with the NHL and thy took only 5 teams, even though we averaged 9800 per game we didnt make the cut. If anyone knows Hockey, these players were on our team when we disbanded. Damned great players.
Ken Linesman
Mark Napier
Rod Langway
Pat Riggen in goal
Tough guys Dave Hanson and Steve Durbano
Anyone want to read the story... "Slap Shot" had nothing on the Birmingham Bulls... NHL.com here is the link, if I got it right...LOL.

"Alabama lined up at the 30 yard line moving left to right across your radio. Coker in the pistol formation takes the snap. Give to Henry over the left side. He side steps a man and gets to the outside! Spins out of a tackle! Cuts in side. shakes a man and he's brought down at the 34 yard line."
I swear it seems like a massive play and then you realize the guy just talks fast and it was a 3-5 yard gain. Frustrating.
Jim Hawthorn's LSU calls are the opposite:
"Lined up on the I, two WR set, hand off to Williams, he's met at the line and stacked up! Gain of 7"

Rebuttal?
None needed. I've known him since I was 11 years old and he has never been anything but one exceptional guy to my family and everyone else who I have ever known that has had sustained contact with him.
If you want to say "he's fat and I heard he's an arse", then so be it. But that comment is made out of pure ignorance.

Not a fan. Can't wait for Chris Stewart to take over.

My grandparents were Miami Eagles fans and I remember programs and papers when I was really young from some of their bigger games including against the Bulls. Unless I'm thinking of a different organization. Had forgotten about them and those names until you brought it up.

I was an usher my senior year at Bama. They brought Dave Hanson back that last year to play with the youngsters. Michel Goulet was also on that team and went on to have a great NHL career. Saw Gretzky play as an under age junior for Edmonton...the NHL wouldn't sign juniors. Only 4 teams merged with the NHL...Edmonton, Winnipeg, New England, and Quebec. Cincinnati died with the Bulls. Great rivalry with the Stingers. One night I saw Hanson get in a fight with a guy, but for some reason the other guy got more minutes. Hanson and the other guy kept jawing with each other while in the boxes. When Hanson got out and was skating by the other penalty box, he jumped in and started beating the shite out of the other guy. I think Durbano had actually been banned for life from one of the minor leagues. And yeah, hockey is far and away what Eli Gold is best at...and probably a more difficult sport to call.
