I know that you are the original SEC school with a tiger mascot, which is awesome, but I bet others would like to know more about it history.

Thanks

Is it true at A&M that after every home game victory the male cheerleaders tackle the Yell leader, engage in a big tickle fight, and then carry him across campus to dump him in a water fountain?

FIFY. The area around Central Missourah was called Little Dixie due to settlers from Virginia.

MO folks fight about everything then and now. Even within the family.

actually thats wrong, boone county was largely confederate but Columbia was a Union town and the Tigers were a Union militia

LINK

One particularly famous Home Guard militia was that of Columbia, Missouri. In 1864, it was rumored that Confederate General Sterling Price was planning on turning his march through Missouri towards the staunchly pro-Union town. Columbia had value not only as a stronghold of pro-Union thought, but served as home to a garrison of Union troops and prison located in the library and main academic building at the University of Missouri. Worried about Price's raid and concerned about the presence of bushwhackers in the surrounding areas of pro-Confederate Boone County, ninety men assembled a militia named the "Missouri Tigers". The brigade stockpiled weapons, kept watch, set up a warning bell for the town, and even dug a moat around the city courthouse.

Yes. The freshmen get to fondle them as a reward for yelling loud enough to win the game. Also, the yell leaders have to strip. It basically ends up being a wet T-shirt contest at the fountain.

So the SEC has:

One university that named itself after Union supporters
One university that named itself after Confederate supporters (but has the best live mascot in sports)
One university that calls itself the tigers but who's mascot is a bird

No wonder people think the South is all f'd up.

That was the first year we were in the SEC. Every Missouri fan was lighting up that year.

Columbia, MO in the mid 1850s thru the 1860s was as liberal then as it is today. However, the rest of the state other than St. Louis was much more conservative and sympathized more with the south.

Only a small portion of Southern MO sympathized more with the south. The rest stood with the Union. Although it was pretty crazy between individuals, the majority of the state sided with the union.
