I'm glad you had a positive experience in KC. Most people have a negative misconception about the city. I'm not sure where that comes from, but I like to hear stories like yours.

It's the name. People hear "Kansas" City and think of kansas, and subsequently associate it with boring, flat, cow-town with nothing going on/nothing to do. People from the east coast probably assume we don't even have electricity.

It really is cool to hear almost every person who visits KC say it was not at all what they were expecting (in a good way). In my completely biased opinion, KC is one of the most underrated cities around. It's a cool/fun city without the reputation for being cool/fun.

KC, just like STL gets a bad rap from folks who it seems haven't ever been there. I live in STL, but have had some great weekends in KC. I think some of it comes from both having fairly high crime rates and both having some very real hoods, but if you stay in the right areas I've always loved both cities. I lived in Denver for 6 years and the thing for me that separates is the weather more than anything. We get the worst of both seasons. A lot of people in Denver/Cali just assume STL is crap despite having no real reason to have any opinion.
