I mean this as a complement to Texas A&M and its resources: they could do better than Sumlin, much better. A&M's AD should have dared Sumlin to leave and call him on his bluff. Instead he got a massive payday for letting Johnny Manziel do his thing. I understand the irony of this given LSU gave Les job security after Jeff Long's "offer", but at least his new contract was justifiable.

His 2013 gameplan against LSU was a laugh riot. Horrible LSU defense that basically just prepped for Johnny to run around.

Anyways, I think Chavis will help him out a lot adjusting his scheme to SEC play, but for now he's been pretty exposed as far as his scheme is concerned.

eta: And I don't think Sumlin is just clueless. he's just wayy overrated and from a performance-based pay standpoint is not getting it done.

No way. I don't care if Sumlin is a bust and we waste the money on him AND Chavis, I will always say keeping Sumlin that year was essential.

If we replace Sumlin that offseason, then both us and Texas would have gotten coaches the same offseason. And because they were willing to eat the second largest buyout ever I am pretty sure they would have ended up with a better "on paper" hire.

Which means unless our hire was the best hire in the history of our program we are staring down the barrel of the old way of life when Texas beat us in almost every head-to-head recruitment because the hires sent a clear signal they are the better program. Now because we don't play them and we hired at different cycles its ambiguous whose program is in better shape, and quite frankly any ambiguity benefits us more than them. So $5 millin a year for Sumlin and $1.6 million for Chavis is the best money A&M ever spent.

Add in the fact that there was no coach I wanted in that cycle (or this cycle really) and its a slam dunk. If Sumlin is just a placeholder until Chad Morris learns the ropes of being a head coach I am fine with that. Patience is key, there is always next year.
