Hugh would have been better served to have just run with the vanilla response, "we are handling this internally and gathering all of the facts about the situation."

Nothing wrong with that. In fact, it's the safest/best way to handle situations like this. Don't offend anyone, especially someone who could get pissed and get diarrhea of the mouth to the Clarion Ledger, NCAA investigators, etc.
