You make a great point. It takes new D1 coaches a long time to adjust the taller baskets, further free throw lines, etc. also, the rounder basketballs are a huge gamechanger for coaches. coaches just don't get that without D1 experience.
You realize you just invalidated your own argument, right? I'll let you figure it out.

So keep ripping Van Leer and Puryear before you've even seen them play
I have seen them play. Hopefully they get better in time.

Glad I kept reading because I was gonna point it out for him.

Yes Otto Porter was sooooo under recruited that he went to G town...
Posted on 3/23/15 at 11:36 am to seaniec04
Its a pretty well known fact that Porter didn't play AAU, so he was a relative unknown until Thompson got wind from a G Town alum. Shot up the rankings when services found out who he was senior year.
Point was that tiny towns don't get recruiting hype

I think VanLeer can be a player. Not right away, but he's the type of shooter that could really excel at the college level.
Puryear is just such a tweener I'm not sure how effective he can be.

Are you intent on being obtuse? Porter was under the radar until his senior year because he played at a small school and didn't do AAU. There's some similarities to Baker there. If you're intent on focusing on the dissimilarity, you can be. It doesn't negate the analogy. Just points out that, like every analogy, it isn't perfect.

He was under recruited given his talent level. If he had played in STL and played for the STL Eagles AAU team, we all would have heard about him and his hype like Tatum or close to it. So yes, he ended up at Gtown, but that doesn't mean he wasn't under recruited.

I agree on Puryear. Plus, we have a bunch of those types of players already. J3. Gant. Allen. To a certain extent, Teki.
As for VanLeer, I hope you're right.

I made one comment in a reply on a forum. Just because I disagree doesn't mean I'm being purposefully annoying. I just prefer to not bash on our coach all off season. Otto was late to the recruiting game and blew up. He certainly was never walking on anywhere, ever.

I'd prefer to not bash him all off-season as well.

Ditto. Landing Thomas Bryant would go a long way towards that end.

I think we would all prefer this. But, alas, we are coming off of the worst season in school history. There aren't many who are going to take this lightly, myself included. I gave KA every fair shake this season. I didn't pass judgement until the very end. I even gave realistic grades in the other thread. He didn't fail in all respects, but certainly more than should be acceptable.

Scott City has almost 4,000 people. It is a 3A school but is not near Topeka, Lawrence, KC, or Wichita so a lot of people didn't see him play. The kid has a great work ethic better than a lot of top talent.

As for Ron Baker, he was the Otto Porter of kansas. Played at a tiny school (scott city has like 500 people total). That doesn't attract a lot of suitors. He was 6'3" coming out of HS, which isn't an attractive prospect for a kid from a tiny school. He wasn't even ranked by ESPN.

Alden failed in that regard, big time.
